Other energy conservation can be done in the pulp
industry is the application of coal gasification technology,
which in this gasification process, hydrocarbon is converted
into synthetic gas (syngas) that is a mixture of carbon
monoxide and hydrogen. The synthesis gas is used to burn
lime (lime mud/CaCO3) on the calcination process (lime
kilns) in order to save oil consumption and to reduce CO2
emission.
Gasification can also be made to the biomass
contained in the pulp mill, such as bark, pin chips and fines.
Biomass fuel is made or molded into pellets and then
carried out gasification in the gasifier reactor. The calorific
value of syngas formed larger than the biomass if directly
burned in power boilers. Syngas from biomass gasification
can be used to fuel power plants with integrated recovery
boilers and as fuel for lime kilns.
The use of other biofuels that can be developed to
utilize the energy content in the NCG (non-condensable
gases). With the methanol content of 1% in the NCG allow
this gas be isolated and used to fuel limekiln, that will
reduce demand for oil and coal and also reduce CO2
emission.
