4.2 Saving Energy and Carbon Emission in the Paper
Industry
Energy is used in various unit processes in the
paper industry. Energy used to drive motors, pumps,
vacuum, drying, and so forth. Energy saving opportunities
in various levels certainly exist, but should be sorted for
effective energy saving measures.
Roles and opportunities for energy conservation in
various key processes in the paper industry, is seen in
Table 4.2. At the table, the paper industry are categorized
into 2 groups: paper mills with pulp as raw material and
integrated mills. The plant consists of an integrated paper
mill raw material made from raw wood and waste paper.
There is a difference in energy consumption between the
two categories of plants for the same type of paper
because the different sources of raw material. Raw material
for paper pulp mill, pulp dry flat imported or purchased from
outside, inside there are factors of transportation. While the
integrated pulp mills already available in the factory and in
the form of slurry that can be directly used.
In Table 4.2 it can also be seen, the greatest
opportunities for energy savings exist in two places, namely
refining and drying. Refining is a mechanical process to
modify the fiber to be worthy created sheet and contribute
directly to the quality of the paper. Drying is the process of
dewatering of the sheet by means of evaporation. Various
drying techniques can be applied to improve the efficiency
of this drying process. Overall, energy use in the industrial
the type of raw materials and products can be seen in
Table 4.2.
