The rock basilica of Palazzo Platamone at Rosolini was only documented graphically through
the inaccurate nineteenth-century surveys by C. Sciuto Patti; nor was there a careful reading of its
planimetry and volumetry in relation to the Christian context of the southern Iblei territory. The
author offers an up-to-date graphic examination of the basilica and a functional rereading of the cult
spaces. Attention is concentrated above all on the part with a hovel, hypothesized to have had a
baptismal function, and on the unusual characterization of the apse bowl, which could have contained
a synthronon, essential in the administration of the Christian catechumenal rites.
Francesca Trapani, L’impianto progettuale
The contribution examines the basilica of Palazzo Platamone from the design point of view,
identifying for the building a compositional ratio formed by multiples and submultiples from a base
square. Comparison with other cult buildings with a basilical plan done in Sicily in the 5 th and 6 th
centuries makes it possible to detect the application of analogous compositional rationes referable to a
basic square plan scheme inside which the nave and two aisles are inscribed, with the central space
twice as wide as the side ones. The recurrence of this scheme reveals, above all for basilical cult
buildings pertaining to rural places, the existence of a common building practice followed, both in
masonry architecture and in architecture dug out in the rock. This tradition is set halfway between late
Roman building culture and Byzantine, as also seems to be revealed by employment, for the
Platamone basilica, of a measurement unit equal to a foot of 30 cm, closer to the Roman foot of
around 29.6 cm than to the Byzantine foot of around 31 cm.
