Paolo d’Amico, laureato in Economia e Commercio,
Ciro d’Amico, Paolo’s father became president
of Confitarma in 1972 succeeding Angelo
Costa who was president of both Confindustria
and Confitarma. Ciro together with Ernesto Fassio
and Ercole Lauro, presidents of the Genoa
and Naples associations brought about their
merger in 1976. Antonio d’Amico, Paolo’s uncle
was president of Confitarma from 1989 to 1995.
Under his presidency the Federation of the Sea
and the “Young Owners Group” were formed.
Paolo d’Amico, an Economics and Commerce
graduated joined the board of d’Amico Società
di Navigazione in 1994, becoming president in
2002. Currently he has a number of responsibilities
in the d’Amico Group and is on the board
of many companies including Singapore’s Intertanko.
the maritime industry despite their promises. But our
discussions are also with the institutions, the world of
finance and new markets. We must insist on the importance
of the maritime world for the development of
the country. The maritime industries produce 36.500
million euros of value each year and contribute 2.7% of
GNP that is more than textiles and agriculture. Investment
in all forms amounts to 11.600 million, 4.4% of all
Italian investment.
Can you describe Italian shipping in numbers
There are 1570 units in the fleet. The numbers with
Italian flag have increases by 81% since 1998. Investment
amounts to 27.000 million euros and numbers
employed have increased by 65%. We are 12 th in the
world for flag carrying fleets with 16 million tons, 8.7%
more than in 2008. In 2009 Italy was Europe’s number
one shipping investor with an investment of 1 billion
euros in new vessels. 64% of the fleet is less than 10
years old and 35% has less than 5 years
Pirating
Confitarma has always paid much attention to the
difficult situation which has been created in the Gulf
of Aden and off the Somali coast where navigation is
always in danger of pirate attacks. As a result of our
requests for naval assistance escorts were sent out in
2005 and 2008 and in 2009 Italy played an active role in
the European mission “Atlanta”.
The Italian interests are substantial considering that
of the 22.000 annual transits of the Suez canal, 2.000
represent Italian interests and 600 that is two a day, are
made by Italian flagged vessels
Can you explain what is holding up the development
of shipping
We run up against bureaucratic difficulties with useless
costs (between 100.000 and 200.000 euros per annum).
We lack a strategy to maintain Italian maritime
leadership in the Mediterranean and in general there is
strong uncertainty regarding the future.
Apart from worries about the international competitiveness
of our fleet, the ecobonus has not been
renewed for “sea ways”. We hope that the ecobonus
which has produced excellent results will be given
adequate cover in the next finance law where undersecretary
Giachino has already given a strong commitment.
In addition after 10 years the reduction of social
security contributions on wages on shipping in the
smaller islands has not been renewed with the risk of
loosing out to more aggressive EU flags as a result of
market liberalisation.. Confindustria also supports us.
In the course of our AGM Ms Marcegaglia in the name
Italian industry confirmed the need for the reforms
the country needs. Within a short space of time politicians
must adopt policies which enable business to
plan investment. This requires the certainty of rights, a
judicial system that functions, efficient administration
and facing up to fiscal problems and those related to
infrastructure and logistics.
Have there been signs of recovery in the first few
months of this year
2010 expects a recovery of 2% in world traffic. Already
the end of 2009 showed good growth in bulk and
gas carriers and to a lesser extent for tankers which
have not suffered as much because of their use for
crude storage. Containers are recovering slowly in line
with recovery in the advanced nations.
