Innovative solutions to improve the managementof passengers flow, decreasing the ship dwellingtime in the port and reducing energy consumption relatedto port activities. VTP Engineering was foundedto meet the needs of an important passenger port likeVenice and has developed into a division of VeneziaTerminal Passeggeri S.p.A. The first solution to becarried out and that will be presented to the operatorsduring the events Green Port Logistics and Energy forGreen Ports (Venezia, Marittima, Terminal 103, 23-24February 2011) and Seatrade Cruise Shipping (Miami14-17 March 2011) is the MBT (Multipurpose BoardingTower). An innovative solution - the result of a partnershipwith Abacoingegneria Treviso - facilitating theembarkment and disembarkment of passengers (especiallythose with reduced mobility) from cruise ships, using elevators to link the dock, terminal and vessel, regardless of the height of the boarding ramp, therebygiving a number of alternative and safer routes to passengers, dock operators and crew. The MBT project originates from an analysis of thefunctional deficiencies of current boarding gangwaysin relation to the ever-greater dimensions and passengercapacity of the new cruise ships. The MBT facilitatesthe embarkment and disembarkment of passengers, reproducing outside the elevator system availablein a ship. On the dock the elevators open up ontoa covered hall located at some decimetres of height,air-conditioned and connected to the dock by steps oralternatively to a short ramp. From the Terminal side, the elevators stop near fixed landings at exact sameheight as the Terminal and close to the external fixedboarding bridge. On the ship side the MBT is equipped with a heightadjustableextendible tunnel, which is set at the heightrequired by the ship and connecting it. This tunnelprovides the compensation for tide variations. TheMBT limited overall dimensions are among the pointsof strength of the solution. In fact the MBT measuresonly 9mx15m with a tower height of 18m. The verylimited overall dimensions on the dock, leave the shipside free for luggage delivery or other activities. Itscharacteristics allow the MBT to be suitable also forships with outboard lifeboats. The MBT is providedwith a boarding point reachable from 4m to 14m highabove the dock level and thanks to three elevators, holding twenty-six persons each, is able to clear flowsof over 2500 persons per hour, with the possibility toreserve one of the lift for port and ship personnel. TheMBT was conceived as a modular system and addingsome modules, the solution can work as a little terminal. The internal area can be dedicated to host a securitycheck-point giving direct access to the ship fromthe dock without passing through the terminal. invece, si fermano in corrispondenzadi pianerottoli alla quota esatta delterminal, e prospicienti la passerellafissa esterna. A tale tunnel ègenerator for total autonomy of thesystem. The MBT moves using therails existing in commercial portsor using a reinforced concrete stripand is conceived to resist also to thewind stress.“The logistics of passengers andgoods and the technological innovationsthat change the ships daily- underlines the Managing Directorof VTP, Roberto Perocchio - imply alwaysmore necessary to implementnew solutions to divide, rationalizeand make secure the flow inside thecruise terminal. The MBT, currentlyworking on the Piave quay, is the hightechnology answer to these needs. The MBT, which has been granted aEuropean and International patent, represents the ideal option for bothTerminal with high number of passengersto which the MBT ensuresfluidity and speed in the disembarkment- embarkment, and Terminalwith a limited traffic which cannotafford huge investments to developnew infrastructure, as well as forcruise companies which can reckonon a nimble technology to link theship to the dock directly, reducingpassengers’ long transfer on foot”.devoluta la compensazione deimovimenti di marea.
