Red.Mar.Naples port plans its futureNaples Port Authority has started this year with an extra gear. A number ofimportant projects are about to start up including resurfacing Beverello pier, apassenger area, dredging and building the new Levant dock. All the bureaucratic phases have now been completed but more importantlyagreements with institutions necessary to start up work has been reached.Naples port will be able to reconfirm its multi purpose role and its ability toprogramme its future in response to the market and operators needs. Despitetraffic losses in Italy’s ports as well as ports world wide, Naples has maintaineda positive trend in all its main traffic categories. 550,000 containers handled in2010, 8 million passengers including the nearby islands and ship building andrepairing which gives work directly and indirectly to 5,000 people.Luciano Dassatti Port Authority president declared “the strong point of this portis the intelligence, imagination and willingness of the businessmen operatingin and with the port. The difference here is the flexibility and readiness of a portanything but single brand and single culture but used by many ship owners. We are working to maintain and increase traffic. The recent Environment Ministrydecree has enabled us to go to public tender for emergency dredging ofa part of the port. 70,000 metric tons of sediment created by ships propellersand tugs will be removed in front of the Conateco container terminal”.Dredging the port is of fundamental importance and will be in two stages. Firstthe 70,000 mt and secondly 60,000 mt to be used at the marina of Vigliena assoon as repairs are completed after recent storm damage. The dredging is apart of the 1,200,000 mt needed for the construction of the Levant dock.President Dassatti continued “for the Levant dock building we have provisionallyawarded the contract to a group of companies and we await the outcomeof appeal made to TAR by other companies not included before starting work”.Value of the work is 400 million euro which will give the port a 250,000 sq mtcontainer terminal capable of handling 1 million teu. Project financing will beused with the port authority responsible for 180 million euro and the balancedivided equally between COSCO and MSC.Together with containers, tourist traffic is of fundamental importance to theport. Traffic has continued to increase over the last few years and now Naplesis one of the Mediterranean’s most important cruise ports with Naples confirmedas Italy’s number three with 1,140,000 cruise passengers. In additionNaples is Seaways number one port in Italy and second in the world for passengersincluding the nearby islands and coastal towns. The project for resurfacing and improving the waterfront drawn up by Euvewinner of the 2004 international competition is well on. Delays were causedby administrative hold ups.Luciano Dassatti underlined ”we had to discuss many aspects of the projectwith the City council as well as the Superintendence of Environmental andArchitectural Patrimony of Naples because the project affects an urban areaof high historical value. We should not forget that the tourist area of the portis in the City centre close to buildings such as Maschio Angioino, the RoyalPalace and Piazza Plebiscito. We have reached the right agreement and thereremains only to complete the bureaucratic matters”.The intention is to go ahead in stages also because the waterfront work mustnot interrupt the work of the port. Beverello pier will be the project startingpoint used by large numbers of people travelling to Capri, Ischia and Procidaby high speed vessels. The Beverello project will start as soon as approvalis obtained from the Superior Council for Public Works which will enable theproject to go to tender. The port authority intends to increase cruise capacityby making use of Castellammare di Stabia port which comes under NaplesPort Authority control and is close to Pompei and the Sorrento coast.febbraio 2011 - 5
