Arkas Italia part of Arkas Group an importantTurkish shipping operator and Fratelli CosulichSpa, a Genoa/Trieste group operating throughoutshipping from agent to owner. The agreement doesnot include exchange of shares but Cosulich will helpmanage Arkas Italia set up in 2008. A new board tookoffice at the time of entering into the agreement withBernard Arcas president and Augusto Cosulich managingdirector. (Arcas and not Arkas derives from thefamilies French roots).The partnership intends to develop the Arkas shippingbusiness in Italy by increasing liner servicesfrom Italy to Mediterranean ports using the Arkas fleetvessels.Arkas founded in 19<strong>02</strong> by Gabriel Jean Arkas isnow run by Lucian Arkas with the support of his twochildren Bernard and Diane. Under his leadership Arkashas grown enormously in logistics, ship-owning,agency, forwarding, terminals in port and inland androad and rail transport.Arkas has 5,500 employees in Turkey and 700 injoint ventures situated in the Mediterranean and inthe Black Sea. Recent openings were in Marocco,Lebanon and Syria. Fleet consists of 29 containerships and 3 bunker vessels operating liner servicesthroughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea. In additionArkas offers feeder to the major global carrierswith logistics services.Lucian Arkas commented “we are sure that collaborationbetween the two groups will lead to futuregrowth in shipping for our companies”.The Arkas/Cosulich agreement is not the only importantnews from Genoa. Important news has alsocome from Genoa broking.The beginning of 2011 is the right time to see howthe first months of BSL Shipowner have gone. BSLGroup specialises in on-line sales of earth movingequipment and nautical products. BSL Ship-owneruses the same on line concept to sell ships.The site opened in the autumn with the objectiveof carrying out at least one transaction in the first sixmonths and after three months BSL had carried outsix transactions Technical manager Giorgio Blandinaex tanker master and Euroceanica fleet manager explained“despite the initial suspicion we have beenable to set up a large net work of collaborators andpartners which enables us to work in close contactwith shipping companies and the more important brokers.The market is not at the level of a year ago andprices are depressed but using our site we note interestin small vessels of any kind such as tankers, bulkvessels, passenger ships and tugs. There is particularinterest in the small bulk carriers left in the hands ofChinese yards after order cancellations or non payment.Most active markets are Middle East, Australiaand Russia”.Mr. Blandina explained that BSL does not competewith but complements the work of traditional brokers.He continued “we are not dominating the market butwe make our site available for selling vessels withoutcharge. The transaction is conducted by the brokerwho recognises a commission of 1% for us exactlythe same as any middle man in shipping. If we are notinvolved in the sale we have no commission and weonly ask to be informed so that the advertisement canbe removed from our site”.In addition BSL Shipowner Service offers otherservices such as ship repairs, BSL will search forthe nearest and best priced yard without commissionfor the owner’s account, legal advice, tugs, requestsfrom supply vessels, anchor handling and all typesof off shore vessels using experts, salvage supportedby experts and naval estimates and valuations. Mr.Blandina concluded “as the first objective at the startof the company has been achieved very quickly wecan pass to stage two consisting of the creation ofyoung professionals in our offices in Genoa”.<strong>febbraio</strong> 2011 - 31
