Mr. John Karlsen, Aalborg Industri-Use of low sulpher fuelsLast 16th December 2010 the Naval Commitee of Naples“Ordine degli Ingegneri”, organized an interestingmeeting with Mistral s.r.l. collaboration regardingthe New Regulations on Low Sulphur Fuel. Three ofmain Mistral s.r.l. principals attended the meeting:Aalborg Industries, Ameron B.V. and Novenco AS.After a brief introduction of Ing. Luigi Vinci (Presidentof The Engineering Council of Naples), Ing. MarcoStarita (Coordinator of Naval Committee of Naples)and Ing. Fabio Spetrini (Secretary and member of theNaval Committee of Naples), it was clear that one ofthe hottest issues on the agenda was the EU Directive2005/33/EC compliance which came into effect on 01January 2010.The Directive specifies that fuel with a maximum sulphurcontent of 0.1% can be used when the vessel isin port or at anchorage, and in order to be in compliancewith, low sulphur gas oil (of DMX or DMA gradeaccording to ISO 8217) must be used. As currentplants are designed mainly for heavy fuel oil operation, this change in fuels will constitute an operationalsafety risk and some operational issues have to beconsidered; particularly the low sulphur fuel has lowerflash point, higher calorific value and lower lubricationcharacteristics when compared to the fuels thatplants were originally designed for.Mr. John Karlsen (Aalborg Industries Customer ManagementManager) showed the upgrade kits that AalborgIndustries has developed to ensure safe plantsoperation remaining in compliance with classificationsociety requirements using fuels with a low sulphurcontent.Obviously with the use of distillate fuels, the fuelcosts will increase. One of targets already achieved by Aalborg, developingWaste Heat Recovery technologies, has been designingan Exhaust Gas Boiler after an Aux. Engine, which is able to give the best performance and economicalresult with a pay-back extremely fast (lessthan one year in more cases).Afterwards an interesting LSFO Updating Case Storyof an Aframax Tanker, equipped with 2 boilers OL of 35t/h of steam plus one exhaust gas boiler steam atomizingburner (KBSD 2650), has been well explained byMr. Kewin Høyrup, Sales Engineer After Sales Repair. In this case LSFO Solution has been to double the fuel26 - febbraio 2011
