Calgary: As they say the easiest
thing to do is to talk. People like to talk
and almost everyone is ready to preach
whenever one gets a chance. Same is
true in case of many an organizations
too. Their websites show heavily
worded aims or claims under the
headings Vision and Mission. But when
it comes to perform towards achieving
those aims or claims, they are nowhere
even near that.
Well, I am glad to say that I do know
at least one organization, and that too
in our beautiful and vibrant city Calgary
itself, which is earnestly doing what it
aimed/claimed to do. Sarb Akal Music
Society of Calgary (SAMS) was

Association Celebrated The
Seniors Birthday and Canada
day in its office on 1st July 2019.
About 60 people attended the
Function. The Birthday Cake
was cut by the Members those
were having Birthday in the
month of June. Lalita Singh,
Mohinder Singh Mundi ,Gurmal
Sandhu delivered the Speeches

An Organization That Walks the Talk

Indian Classical Music.
It’s heartening to see that
SAMS is leaving no stone
unturned to achieve its
target even against the
odds presented by the
prevailing unpleasant and unhealthy
trends in our music industry.
Just to give you an example, we do
know what kind of respect is shown to
our women folk in modern day Punjabi
songs or even films. Most of the times,
any respectable person will feel
embarrassed when he/she hear these kind
of songs in presence of the family
members or in a gethering. Sarb Akal is
holding its fourth annual event, Indian
Classical Music Festival (ICMF2019), on
Sept. 13 & 14 at Rozsa Centre in University
of Calgary. This 2-day prestigious festival
is dedicated to the 550 th Birth Anniversary
of Shri Guru Nanak Dev jee. As a humble
tribute to His philosophy, the theme for this
ICMF is “So Kyon Manda Aakhiye Jit
Jamme Rajan”. This translates to “Why call
her inferior? From her, the kings are born”.
This message was given by Guru Nanak
Dev on female gender equality centuries
ago. Following the theme in true sense,
Sarb Akal is organizing the event in such
a way that this message is amplified
enough which is evident from the fact that
out of the five solo artists, which are star
attractions, four are women. Lot of
planning and efforts have gone into to
make the event befitting to what we say i.e.
it’s a tribute to gender equality. Another
example to illustrate Sarb Akal’s commitment
to the theme of gender equality is the recent
elections for its new executive committee
which were held on July 13, 2019 during
its Annual General Meeting convened
at SAMS office. The meeting agenda
included: Previous Business, 2019
Events held, ICMF, Future events, 2018
Financials, Volunteers and Elections.
Following Executive Board
members were elected by the members
unanimously for year 2019-2020: S.
Harjeet Singh – President, Mr. Jasbir
Chahal – Vice President, Mr. Piyush
Vyas – General Secretary, Mrs. Payal
Patel – Event Director, Mrs. Meenu
Kulkarni – Treasurer, Mrs. Avi Parmar
– Director at large (Newly elected),
Mrs. Poonam Gangahar – Director at
large (Newly elected). You will notice
that females are in the majority in its
new Executive Committee.
Regarding Sarb Akal’s talk about
preserving and promoting the classical
music, it’s a pleasure to see that this
organization has set a mile stone by
starting Sarb Akal Radio at 94.7FM. This
is the first-ever radio program in Calgary
which is totally dedicated to Classical
Music. A trend setter, we can say as we
do hope that other producers will follow
the suit and we, the Calgarians, will be
able to listen to more of melodious and
clean music in coming months and years.

on Tuesdays.
