About the Student
My name is Jia Li Wang. I am 16 years old and currently in the 11th grade. I have been studying
Mandarin in the Dual Language Immersion Program for nearly 12 years, starting from
kindergarten. I have also completed my studies at Buddha's Light Hsi Lai Chinese School after 11
years of Saturday courses, where I participated in various academic competitions, including poetry
recitals. At home, I live with my mom, who primarily speaks English. Although our family is of
Chinese ethnicity, my mom wasn't able to practice or learn Chinese while growing up in Indonesia
due to ethnic discrimination. This led to her losing much of her cultural roots, which is why she
wanted me to learn Chinese. Despite our efforts to use Chinese at home, English remains our
primary means of communication. During my free time, I enjoy listening to C-pop and Chinese
OSTs. I have a passion for reading Chinese books, ranging from romance novels to philosophy
and sociology. I also relish watching Chinese reality shows and dramas. My first drama was 《 活
佛 济 公 》, but my favorite has to be 《 狂 飙 》. I hope to major in Chinese when I enter college.
