bucerius law school is the first and only private law school in germany. its hallmarks
are an international focus, practical and performance orientation, and attention to the
personal development of the individual student. Each year, a class of about 115 students
is admitted to attend bucerius law school. The sole deciding factors for admission are
the intellectual and personal aptitude for the study of law. Each fall, 115 students study
abroad at more than 90 partner law schools all over the world. at the same time, an
equivalent number of foreign students come to bucerius to participate in the Program in
international and comparative business law.
The law school is named after gerd bucerius (1906 – 1995). after receiving his doctorate
in law, bucerius began his legal career as a judge in northern germany in Kiel and flensburg.
but the national socialists soon banned him from public service because he was
married to a Jewish woman and had Jewish forebears. Therefore, gerd bucerius started
working as a lawyer in Hamburg. after the second World War, gerd bucerius began his
second career: politics. from 1949 to 1962, he represented the christian democratic
Party (cdu) in the german federal Parliament. as owner and co-founder of the german
weekly “die zeit” and shareholder of the publishing house gruner + Jahr, he became one
of the most significant figures in post-war german publishing.
in 1971, he founded the zEiT-stiftung Ebelin and gerd bucerius, which is the univer-
sal heir of bucerius and his wife’s estate. since 2000, the zEiT-stiftung Ebelin and gerd
bucerius has been one of the ten largest privately established foundations in germany.
it provides funding primarily in the areas of science and scholarship, education, and culture.
The members of the executive board of the foundation are: michael berndt, Professor
dr. michael göring (cEo), and Professor dr. dres. h.c. Karsten schmidt. bucerius law
school is the biggest and most ambitious initiative of the zEiT-stiftung Ebelin und gerd
bucerius. it was founded to stimulate new developments in higher education in germany
and to make a contribution to german legal education.
