Kommentar The course will focus on the politics of gender and the social and political
challenges facing women / women‘s movement in Muslim and Middle Eastern
societies. even the most casual observer of the Muslim world would notice the
centrality of gender in the politics of the Islamist movements but equally
important is the centrality of the „women question" as part of the globalization
and the implications of international politics on the social and political
transformations in these societies. The issues of the politics of gender is, hence,
complicated and problematic as a result of internal and external factors such as:
Islam (as a religion), political Islam, nationalism, patriarchal and cultural
structures, colonialism and global transformation. In the course we will try to
understand the dynamics of gender, state and the role of Islam in different Muslim
societies, and the implications of these dynamics on relevant important themes
like: secularist/Islamic/and Islamist (fundamentalist) feminism, gender and
citizenship, modernity and patriarchy, the nature of women‘s activism and women
in the public sphere. This will be done through using political theories about the
state, gender and social movements, and also introducing the students
contemporary debates regarding women‘s rights, women‘s activism and roles in
such societies.
Verteidigungspolitik (ESVP) ins Leben gerufen.
