Englischkurs Frau Lober-Schultz
1.What’s the name?
There is a big city in the west of Germany,
some 600,000 people live there.
It is about 80 kilometres from the Belgian
border and near the Ruhrgebiet area.
The city is a big exhibition point and a
lot of people come to visit it. In the city
there are many pubs and restaurants
and the longest ‘beer counter’ of the
world is said to be there. And when the
sun is shining you can also sit in a café
near the well-known river.
Another popular attraction is the
shopping district, called “Königsallee”
which is in the city centre. Once a year
there is a special event in springtime: a
lot of people come to enjoy themselves
in fancy dresses and costumes, and
there is a procession of floats through
the city.
Gaby Hagedorn, Lauenberg
2. What’s the name?
It is a middle-sized town in Lower
Saxony between Hanover, Wolfenbüttel
and Brunswick, south of Hamburg, and
with a nice old part of town.
There are a lot of half-timbered houses
like in Einbeck. Every year lots of tourists
come to visit this place.
There is a river, a castle and a famous
horse stud farm.
What town is it?
Hannelore Berg, Einbeck
3. What’s the name?
This town is about 35 kilometres east
of Einbeck. It’s a medium-sized town
with a nice old centre.
There is a world-wide famous building
protected by the UNESCO.
A small river flows through this place
and there are two dams, and it is
surrounded by hills and a lot of forests.
There is a famous Christmas market.
The town was near the German-German
border 20 years ago.
What’s the name of it?
Ilona Nitsch, Salzderhelden
4. What’s the name?
This place is a very big city – a capital
and on the Vltava river. It is north of
Vienna and south of Berlin. There are
a lot of interesting sights, for example
a very old bridge and a beautiful castle
complex. You can listen to different
languages in the street, and people in
this place eat ‘Knedliki’ with sauerkraut
and drink beer. There are some small
breweries. What is the name of this
place?
Justine Matussek, Einbeck
5. What’s the name?
The town I describe here is on the river
Aller. It is 40 kilometres northeast of
Hanover, 60 kilometres northwest of
Brunswick and 120 kilometres south
of Hamburg. It has got about 71,000
inhabitants and together with Lüneburg
it is the biggest town between Hanover
and Hamburg.
This place was mentioned for the first
time in 985 as “Kiellu” which means
“fishbay”.
In 1301 “Kiellu” was officially regarded
as “town” and from 1370 on it was
the residence of the dukes of Saxony-
Wittenburg. The last duke, who died
in 1705, left this principality to the
Hanoverian House of Welf. From then
on “Kiellu” turned out to be a city of
civil servants and lawyers. Today it is
both home of the Higher Social Court
(Landessozialgericht) and the Higher
Regional Court (Oberlandesgericht) as
well as “Salinenmoor” prison.
In the local museum you will learn a lot
about the history of this town.
The “Schlosstheater” was founded in
1674, and today it is the oldest entertainment
theatre of Germany.
Most people come and visit the town
centre with its wonderful timber-framed
houses, in particular the “Happener
Haus”. The “speaking street lamps”
will sometimes tell you amusing facts
about life in this place.
Other well-known sights are the castle
and the church “St. Marien” with its
tomb. The castle park is home of the
Lower Saxonian bee-institute.
Where is it?
Katrin Bode, Einbeck
6. What’s the name?
Island in the sun: The village which I
think of is on the largest German Island.
It has got a northern and a southern
beach. The southern beach is very nice.
You have the feeling as if you were in
Cornwall. You can only hear the sea
and the sea gulls. Simply the nature
and you. In the evening you can light a
fire on the beach, and there is always
someone who plays an instrument there.
The houses in the village are beautiful,
they are very old resort architecture.
On the northern beach there is the socalled
“Amber Promenade” and a really
nice pier. There are dozens of small and
interesting shops and boutiques. There
is one shop only selling amber. On the
Amber Promenade you can walk up to
Baabe and Selin.
With the “Orlando Furioso” you can get
to the seaside resorts of Selin and Binz.
These places are worth a trip, but in
summer they are full of tourists.
When I was a child the nicest places
were our bakery and grocery, and when
we stay there now, we live in a white
house with large balconies in a street
with cobblestone pavement called
“Lindenstraße”.
I have only seen this beautiful place
twice, but I am always happy to return
there.
Marion Hundertmark, Einbeck
7. What’s the name?
I would like to introduce you to my
home village. It is a small village with
1,000 inhabitants. Around the village
there is a lot of agriculture, and it is
near the Solling. It is the biggest compact
woodland in Germany.
In our village there is a kindergarten
with a big playground, and there are
two pubs and restaurants, too. The
church is in the middle of the village.
We have an outdoor swimming pool
which the people like very much.
Unfortunately, we haven’t got a
supermarket. That isn’t good for elderly
inhabitants. But there is a bakery. Old
people must go shopping to the nearest
town. There is a supermarket and a
butcher.
The people in our village are very nice. I
live in a small house with my husband,
our dog and parrot. I like this village.
Now, where is it?
Birgitt Stünkel, Lauenberg
8. What’s the name?
GUESS THE VILLAGE / TOWN / CITY ...
The town I describe is situated near
the North Sea in Germany. You can
visit two harbours and a big museum
about navigation. The “Auswandererhaus”
(house of emigration) opened
4 years ago and shows the history of
many people from Eastern Europe and
Germany who started from this town
into a better life in America about 150
years ago.
In one of the harbours you can see a lot
of big ships which bring fish in from the
North Sea. In the local restaurants you
can eat fish or take it home. The freshly
smoked fish is very delicious.
In the other harbour you can see many
workers who drive new cars into big
ships. Other workers unload cars from
Japan for people in Germany and
Eastern Europe.
Sometimes you can see big cruisers
and dream ships with many people
spending their holidays on them.
After the Second World War the
US-army arrived with lots of soldiers
aboard big ships to do their military
service in Germany. On one of the big
ships a famous American singer was
welcomed with his sea-bag over his
shoulder. Many photographers took
photos of him. Everybody could see
the photos in the newspapers later.
Thousands of girls were standing at
the pier and crying.
Do you know both the name of the
town and the singer?
Wilfried Kaufmann, Wenzen
