2.2 Basic Theories and Developments<br />

Crystal growth has been long cherished for the fascinating<br />

observations, where the atomic nature of matter clearly shows itself. It has<br />

been realized that the subject can be divided into two parts: (1) The study of<br />

the equilibrium between the crystal and surrounding medium and (2) The<br />

study of the kinetics of growth.<br />

The Kossel model [19] is helpful to understand the basic theories of<br />

crystal at the absolute zero temperature, at which no thermal vibrations of<br />

component molecules are available, is shown. This represents the profile of a<br />

completely flat surface partially covered by another layer. The boundary line,<br />

where the difference of level equals to an inter-molecular spacing between the<br />
