effects can be expected if <strong>the</strong> tectonic block, with <strong>the</strong><br />
concerned cave is suddenly displaced along tectonic fault<br />
seismically activated. In this part of <strong>the</strong> Rhodopes Mts.<br />
significant quantities of broken speleo<strong>the</strong>ms have been<br />
discovered <strong>in</strong> caves situated <strong>in</strong>side subsided <strong>and</strong><br />
horizontally displaced blocks near clearly expressed active<br />
faults.<br />

The rose‐diagrams of <strong>the</strong> fallen stalagmites can <strong>in</strong>dicate<br />
<strong>the</strong> horizontal component of <strong>the</strong> predom<strong>in</strong>ant direction<br />
of displacements (<strong>the</strong> opposite direction of <strong>the</strong><br />
maximums) of <strong>the</strong> hang<strong>in</strong>g wall of <strong>the</strong> fault. The<br />
deformations of speleo<strong>the</strong>ms <strong>in</strong> 11 caves <strong>in</strong> different karst<br />
areas <strong>in</strong> Bulgaria, located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hang<strong>in</strong>g walls of active or<br />
capable faults are <strong>in</strong>vestigated <strong>in</strong> detail by Kostov (2008).<br />
The similar orientations of <strong>the</strong> deformed speleo<strong>the</strong>ms <strong>in</strong><br />
Yamata Cave <strong>and</strong> Shepran Cave suppose <strong>the</strong> effect of<br />
common seismotectonic event dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Pleistocene,<br />
connected with possible activation of <strong>the</strong> Dobrostan fault.<br />
The study denotes <strong>the</strong> important role of <strong>the</strong> movement<br />
itself of <strong>the</strong> tectonic block dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> process of ruptur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> displacement along an active or capable fault.<br />
