expected if registration of landholdings genuinely reflected <strong>the</strong> way land was<br />

worked. Moreover, in a plains village <strong>the</strong> small number of houses held by those<br />

without land is remarkable.<br />

The houses vary in value from 1,000 guruş to 5,000, <strong>the</strong> average being 2,300.<br />

Five thousand guruş for a house is comparatively high for <strong>the</strong> district (see Map<br />

5.6). The four houses of non-landholders are no less substantial than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

valued at 2,000, 1,500, 3,000 and 2,000 guruş respectively. Despite <strong>the</strong> high<br />

minimum value, <strong>the</strong>re is no evidence of ano<strong>the</strong>r factor at work in <strong>the</strong> house list,<br />

such as only registering houses built of basalt, that might explain both <strong>the</strong> high<br />

valuation of houses and exclusion of those who lived in less substantial dwellings<br />

such as tents or Roman ruins.<br />

(3) The registration of a joint holding of six shares out of 30 in <strong>the</strong> musha‘<br />

plough land, held by all 15 sets of shareholders, is ano<strong>the</strong>r feature without parallel<br />

in o<strong>the</strong>r villages. 14 It points to two tiers of tenure, one by <strong>the</strong> shareholders, <strong>the</strong><br />
