were estimated at 750. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n no estimate or<br />

count has been made until <strong>the</strong> present census except<br />

for those <strong>in</strong> Arizona, whose numbers have decreased,<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> reports of <strong>the</strong> Commissioner of In-<br />

dian Affairs, from 350 <strong>in</strong> 1875 to 153 <strong>in</strong> 1909.<br />

Comanche.—In recent times <strong>the</strong> most sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>and</strong><br />

eastern of <strong>the</strong> tribes of this stock <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> only one<br />

Uv<strong>in</strong>g entirely on <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>s. Their earhest traditional<br />

home was <strong>in</strong> Wyom<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> Shoshohi. At<br />

an early period, however, <strong>the</strong>y were forced south <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early eighteenth century were Hv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Kansas<br />

<strong>and</strong> southward. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first half of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e-<br />

teenth century <strong>the</strong>y roamed over a very large area<br />

extend<strong>in</strong>g southward <strong>in</strong>to Mexico. For about 50<br />

years <strong>the</strong>y Ifeve been located with <strong>the</strong> Ejowa on <strong>the</strong><br />

Kiowa <strong>and</strong> Comanche Reservations <strong>in</strong> Oklahoma.<br />

The number enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> was 1,171, of which<br />

1,160 were <strong>in</strong> Oklahoma. Comparison with figures for<br />

previous years shows a great decrease <strong>in</strong> numbers, ac-<br />

cord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g table, compiled from <strong>the</strong> re-<br />

ports of <strong>the</strong> Commissioner of <strong>Indian</strong> Affairs, for <strong>the</strong><br />

tribe <strong>in</strong> Oklahoma:<br />
