HAEDAN STOCK (syn. Skittagetan)<br />

A tribe occupy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Queen Charlotte Isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn portion of Pr<strong>in</strong>ce of Wales Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

British Columbia <strong>and</strong> <strong>Alaska</strong>, <strong>and</strong> form<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

l<strong>in</strong>guistic stock. The tribe formerly lived<br />

wholly <strong>in</strong> what is now Canadian territory, those at<br />

present occupy<strong>in</strong>g part of Pr<strong>in</strong>ce of Wales Isl<strong>and</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

taken possession of this region some time probably <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> early part of <strong>the</strong> eighteenth century. A few immigrant<br />

members of this tribe are also found <strong>in</strong> conti-<br />

nental <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> (see p. 82).<br />

The Haida <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alaska</strong>, as enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong>, were<br />

530, as compared with 415 <strong>in</strong> 1890 <strong>and</strong> 795 <strong>in</strong> 1880.<br />

About 1870 <strong>the</strong>y were estimated at 600.<br />

TLiNGiT STOCK (syn. Koluschan).<br />

Stock as a whole.—A coastal stock of sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

<strong>Alaska</strong>, occupy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>and</strong> adjacent isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

from Portl<strong>and</strong> Canal to Controller Bay. A few immigrant<br />

members of this stock are also found <strong>in</strong> con-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ental <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> (see p. 106).<br />

The <strong>Indian</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> THngit stock, as enumerated <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>1910</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alaska</strong>, numbered 4,426. The number reported<br />

for this stock <strong>in</strong> 1890 was 4,583 <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1880,<br />

6,763.<br />
