Of <strong>the</strong> 22 selected states, as skown by Table 95, New<br />

Mexico bad <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> tbe largest proportion of <strong>Indian</strong>s<br />

who were unable to speak English, represent<strong>in</strong>g 74.8<br />

per cent of aU <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> males 10 years of age <strong>and</strong><br />

over <strong>and</strong> 81.1 per cent of all <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> females of that<br />

age. Arizona <strong>and</strong> Utah also showed large proportions<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong>, represent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of males more than<br />

three-fifths <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of females more than seven-<br />

tenths of <strong>the</strong> entire number 10 years of age <strong>and</strong> over.<br />

The sftiallest proportions of <strong>Indian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> who could<br />

not speak Enghsh are shown for 'New York, North<br />

Carol<strong>in</strong>a, <strong>and</strong> Kansas, for which, except <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of<br />

females for New York, less than 10 per cent were so<br />

reported. With few exceptions <strong>the</strong> proportions unable<br />

to speak English <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> were much less than <strong>in</strong> 1900.<br />

Table 96 shows, for <strong>the</strong> 22 selected states, <strong>the</strong> number<br />

<strong>and</strong> proportion of <strong>Indian</strong> males <strong>and</strong> females 10 to 19<br />

years of age <strong>and</strong> 20 years of age <strong>and</strong> over, respec-<br />

tively, unable to speak Enghsh, as reported at <strong>the</strong><br />

census of <strong>1910</strong>.<br />
