Athapaskan males <strong>and</strong> females <strong>and</strong> also for <strong>the</strong> Eskimauan<br />

females. Of <strong>the</strong> Eskimauan youth <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong>,<br />

over 50 per cent were illiterate—51 for males <strong>and</strong> 58.1<br />

for females— -while for <strong>the</strong> Athapaskan <strong>the</strong> percentages<br />

for each sex were very nearly as large.<br />

Table 91 shows illiteracy among <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> who were enumerated on <strong>the</strong> general<br />

<strong>population</strong> schedule, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore without tribal<br />

designation, for <strong>the</strong> 32 states hav<strong>in</strong>g 100 or more<br />

such <strong>Indian</strong>s 10 years of age <strong>and</strong> over <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong>. The<br />

table shows that of <strong>the</strong> 9,013 <strong>Indian</strong>s 20 years of<br />

age <strong>and</strong> over who were enumerated on <strong>the</strong> general<br />

<strong>population</strong> schedule, 2,144, or 23.8 per cent, were<br />

illiterate, but of <strong>the</strong> 4,689 such <strong>Indian</strong>s 10 to 19<br />

years of age, <strong>the</strong> munber illiterate was only 459, or<br />

9.8 per cent.
