Santee Sioux (syn. Wahpekute Sioux, Mdewakanton<br />

Sioux).—^A tribal name of somewhat uncerta<strong>in</strong> ex-<br />

tension. It has been used generally as apply<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sioux (ma<strong>in</strong>ly mixed Wahpekute <strong>and</strong> Mdewakanton<br />

Sioux), now at <strong>the</strong> Santee Reservation <strong>in</strong> Nebraska<br />

<strong>and</strong> at Fl<strong>and</strong>reau, S. Dak., toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> scattered<br />

Mdewakanton <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>nesota. The earliest assignable<br />

habitat of <strong>the</strong>se two subdivisions of <strong>the</strong> Dakota or<br />

Sioux was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lake district of nor<strong>the</strong>rn M<strong>in</strong>nesota.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> outbreak of 1862 <strong>the</strong> majority were<br />

removed to Crow Creek, S. Dak., <strong>and</strong> later (1866) to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Santee Reservation <strong>in</strong> Nebraska, whence a portion<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> removed to Fl<strong>and</strong>reau, S. Dak., <strong>in</strong> 1876.<br />

The number enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> was 1,539, distributed<br />

as follows: Nebraska, 708; South Dakota, 378;<br />

M<strong>in</strong>nesota, 232; Montana, 107; North Dakota, 100;<br />

scatter<strong>in</strong>g, 14. Figures for <strong>the</strong> portions of this tribe<br />

<strong>in</strong> Nebraska, South Dakota, <strong>and</strong> M<strong>in</strong>nesota are avail-<br />

able back to 1875, from <strong>the</strong> reports of <strong>the</strong> Conunis-<br />

sioner of <strong>Indian</strong> Affairs, as follows:<br />
