among <strong>Indian</strong>s 20 years of age <strong>and</strong> over. For <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong>, as shown by Table 86, <strong>the</strong> percentage<br />

of illiterates among females 20 years of age <strong>and</strong><br />

over was 61.4 as compared with 50.8 for males, while<br />

for <strong>Alaska</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> <strong>the</strong> percentage for females of this<br />

class was 85.5 as aga<strong>in</strong>st 78.1 for males. The proportion<br />

of illiterates <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> among <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> youth<br />

those from 10 to 19 years of age—<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong><br />

was, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, only slightly larger for<br />

females than for males, or 22.8 as compared with 21.7<br />

per cent, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alaska</strong> <strong>the</strong> difference was considerable,<br />

<strong>the</strong> percentages be<strong>in</strong>g 45.3 for females as agaiast 39.8<br />

for males.<br />
