Information as to ability to speak English was<br />

sought <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federal census for <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>in</strong> 1890,<br />

but separate tabulation of <strong>Indian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> this particular<br />

was not made until 1900. The iaquiry at each census<br />

was limited to persons 10 years of age <strong>and</strong> over.<br />

Inability to speak English,, <strong>1910</strong> <strong>and</strong> 1900.—Table 94<br />

shows, for <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> <strong>and</strong> 1900 <strong>and</strong> for<br />

<strong>Alaska</strong> ia <strong>1910</strong> only, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>and</strong> proportion of<br />

all <strong>Indian</strong>s 10 years of age <strong>and</strong> over who were reported<br />

as unable to speak English, <strong>and</strong> separately for those<br />

10 to 19 years of age <strong>and</strong> 20 years of age <strong>and</strong> over.<br />
