STOCKS AND TRIBES, BY SEX, AGE, AND BLOOD. 87<br />
KUTENAiAN STOCK (Kutenay, Kootenai).<br />
A tribe which by itself apparently constitutes an en-<br />
tire l<strong>in</strong>guistic stock. Their traditional home was <strong>in</strong><br />
nor<strong>the</strong>rn Montana <strong>and</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Alberta, east of <strong>the</strong><br />
Rocky Mounta<strong>in</strong>s. From here <strong>the</strong>y moved west across<br />
<strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e-<br />
teenth century, when first known to Europeans, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
have occupied a portion of sou<strong>the</strong>astern British Columbia<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjacent parts of northwestern Idaho <strong>and</strong><br />
Montana. Most of <strong>the</strong> Kutenai <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong><br />
are located on <strong>the</strong> Fla<strong>the</strong>ad Reservation <strong>in</strong> Montana.<br />
The number enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> was 538, of which<br />
424 were <strong>in</strong> Montana <strong>and</strong> 107 ui Idaho. Comparisons<br />
with previous years are of little value, ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />
irregular character of <strong>the</strong> returns for this tribe <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
reports of <strong>the</strong> Commissioner of <strong>Indian</strong> Affairs. So<br />
far as can be judged from <strong>the</strong> figures, however, <strong>the</strong><br />
number of <strong>the</strong> Kutenai <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> has stood<br />
almost stationary s<strong>in</strong>ce 1875.<br />
LUTUAMIAN STOCK.<br />
Stoc^ as a whole.—One of <strong>the</strong> smaller of <strong>the</strong> Pacific<br />
Coast stocks. It occupied a compact area <strong>in</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
Oregon <strong>and</strong> extreme nor<strong>the</strong>rn Cahfornia just east of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Cascades.<br />
The <strong>Indian</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> Lutuamian stock, as enumerated<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong>, numbered 978. The tribes of this stock, for<br />
which members were reported, are as follows:<br />
Klamath. Modoc.<br />
Klamath.—The most nor<strong>the</strong>rly of <strong>the</strong> two tribes com-<br />
pos<strong>in</strong>g this stock. Their habitat, s<strong>in</strong>ce known to<br />
Europeans <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early part of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century,<br />
has been <strong>in</strong> Klamath County, Oreg., aa<strong>in</strong>ly about <strong>and</strong><br />
to <strong>the</strong> east of Klamath Lake. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1864 <strong>the</strong>y have<br />
been located on <strong>the</strong> IQamath Reservation <strong>in</strong> that<br />
state. f<br />
The number enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> was 696, of which<br />
646 were <strong>in</strong> Oregon. Comparable figures for that por-<br />
tion of <strong>the</strong> tribe <strong>in</strong> Oregon, as shown by <strong>the</strong> reports of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Commissioner of <strong>Indian</strong> Affairs, are as follows<br />
