Ventres), <strong>the</strong>ir earliest known habitat was <strong>in</strong> eastern<br />

Montana <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dakotas. From here <strong>the</strong>y moved<br />

westward to <strong>the</strong> base of <strong>the</strong> Rocky Mounta<strong>in</strong>s, previous<br />

to <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century. They<br />

have been located for many years on <strong>the</strong> Crow Eeservation<br />

<strong>in</strong> Montana.<br />

The number enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> was 1,799, of which<br />

1,698 were <strong>in</strong> Montana. Comparative figures, taken<br />

from <strong>the</strong> reports of <strong>the</strong> Commissioner of <strong>Indian</strong><br />

Affairs, show that <strong>the</strong> Crow have suffered a great de-<br />

crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last 30 years. In 1867 <strong>the</strong>y were estimated<br />

at about 4,000. The figures for this tribe <strong>in</strong><br />

Montana are as follows<br />
