The <strong>Indian</strong> popula&n of <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> <strong>and</strong> of<br />

<strong>Alaska</strong> is shown by siligle years of age ia Table 38<br />

(p. 57). _ V . . .<br />

In discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ag6 distribution of <strong>Indian</strong>s it has<br />

been thought best, however, not to attempt a de-<br />

tailed analysis but to conf<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> discussion to three<br />

age groups, those compris<strong>in</strong>g persons under 20 years of<br />

age, 20 to 50 years, <strong>and</strong> 51 years <strong>and</strong> over, represent<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

respectively, <strong>the</strong> young, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

oldest element of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong> <strong>population</strong>. The ages of<br />

<strong>Indian</strong>s are doubtless reported somewhat less accurately<br />

than those of whites, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ages of <strong>Indian</strong><br />

women may perhaps be less accurately given than<br />

those of <strong>the</strong> men, but for <strong>the</strong>se broad age groups <strong>the</strong><br />

numbers are approximately correct for <strong>Indian</strong>s of all<br />

classes comb<strong>in</strong>ed. The figures for <strong>the</strong> several classes<br />

of fuU-blood <strong>and</strong> mixed-blood <strong>Indian</strong>s may, however,<br />

be affected by errors <strong>in</strong> classification or by omissions.<br />

<strong>population</strong> as returned at <strong>the</strong> censuses of <strong>1910</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
