ALGONQUIAN STOCK.<br />

Stock as a whole.—This, <strong>the</strong> largest numerically of<br />

<strong>the</strong> stocks ia <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong>, is also one of <strong>the</strong> largest<br />

bx po<strong>in</strong>t of area covered. With <strong>the</strong> exception of<br />

western New York, parts of western New Jersey <strong>and</strong><br />

Pennsylvania, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Alleghenies, <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

area of <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> east of <strong>the</strong> Mississippi <strong>and</strong><br />

north of a l<strong>in</strong>e drawn from <strong>the</strong> mouth of <strong>the</strong> Ohio to<br />

<strong>the</strong> entrance to Chesapeake Bay was at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century occupied by <strong>Indian</strong>s of this<br />

stock. Far<strong>the</strong>r west, also, <strong>the</strong>re were several tribes<br />

<strong>the</strong> Arapaho, Cheyenne, Gros Ventres, <strong>and</strong> Piegan<br />

—<br />

who w<strong>and</strong>ered over a considerable area on <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

The stock also extend* over a large area <strong>in</strong> Canada.<br />

From a large portion, of this area <strong>the</strong> <strong>Indian</strong>s have long<br />

practically disappeared, but ia parts of Michigan, Wiscons<strong>in</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> M<strong>in</strong>nesota, <strong>and</strong> to some extent <strong>in</strong> Ma<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y still form a considerable element <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>population</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Indian</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> Algonquian stock <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong><br />

<strong>States</strong>, as enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong>, numbered 40,975. To<br />

this figure should be added probably about 1,200 for<br />

<strong>Indian</strong>s of this stock reported without dist<strong>in</strong>ction of<br />

tribe among <strong>the</strong> general <strong>population</strong> <strong>in</strong> Michigan, M<strong>in</strong>-<br />

nesota, <strong>and</strong> Wiscons<strong>in</strong>, mak<strong>in</strong>g a probable total of<br />

about 42,000 ia all. The tribes of this stock, for which<br />

members were reported, are as follows:<br />
