Cheyenne.—One of <strong>the</strong> most important of <strong>the</strong> Algonquian<br />

tribes of <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>s. Their earliest known habi-<br />

tat was <strong>in</strong> western M<strong>in</strong>nesota. From <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y<br />

moved west to <strong>the</strong> Black Hills <strong>in</strong> South Dakota <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

eighteenth century or earher, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>nce gradually<br />

fartiher west <strong>and</strong> south. About 1835 <strong>the</strong> tribe divided<br />

<strong>in</strong>to two portions, <strong>the</strong> one rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Wyom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

vic<strong>in</strong>ity, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r mov<strong>in</strong>g south to sou<strong>the</strong>rn Colorado<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjacent portions of Kansas <strong>and</strong> Oklahoma.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> early eighties <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Cheyenne have<br />

been on <strong>the</strong> Tongue River Reservation <strong>in</strong> Montana.<br />

The Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cheyenne have for 40 years or more been<br />

located on <strong>the</strong> Arapaho <strong>and</strong> Cheyenne Reservation <strong>in</strong><br />

Oklahoma.<br />

The number enumerated <strong>in</strong> <strong>1910</strong> was 3,055, of which<br />

1,522 were <strong>in</strong> Oklahoma <strong>and</strong> 1,346 <strong>in</strong> Montana. The<br />

reports of <strong>the</strong> Commissioner of <strong>Indian</strong> Affairs furnish<br />

comparative figures back to 1880. In 1875 <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

tribe was estimated at over 4,000.<br />
