DR. MAEVE O’BEIRNE, Associate Professor, Departments of Family Medicine and<br />

Community Health Sciences, and Director of Research for the Department of Family<br />

Medicine, University of Calgary<br />

Maeve O’Beirne is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and<br />

Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary, Director of Research for the<br />

Department of Family Medicine, and a family physician. Her research has concentrated on<br />

patient safety in community-based settings. She led a study examining patient safety and<br />

facilitating quality-improvement activities in family physician offices and is currently<br />

involved in a study examining safety in manipulative therapies and in homecare. She has<br />

been involved in designing curriculum in quality improvement in the family medicine<br />

residency program at the University of Calgary and teaches the course “Disclosing<br />

Unanticipated Medical Outcomes” to the family medicine residents.<br />

VINCENT DUMEZ, Director, Faculty Office of the Patient Partner Expertise, Université de<br />

Montréal<br />

Mr. Dumez holds a finance degree and a masters in science of management from<br />

Montreal’s international business school, Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC). Up until<br />

recently, Mr. Dumez was an associate in one of Montréal’s most influential consulting firms,<br />

where he acted as a senior strategic consultant.<br />

Suffering from severe chronic diseases for more than three decades, Mr. Dumez has been<br />

actively involved in the thinking and promotion of the “patient partner” concept at the<br />

Université de Montréal. This involvement has come forward over the recent years through<br />

the completion of his masters dissertation on the patient-doctor relationship, his<br />

contribution to the training of patients, his work on various boards of community<br />

organizations, and his involvement as a speaker in forums and workshops addressed to healthcare<br />

professionals.<br />

In the past years, Mr. Dumez has been a key collaborator for the Education Centre (CPASS) of the Faculty of<br />

Medicine of the Université de Montréal and, since October 2010, the first director of new the Faculty Office of<br />

the Patient Partner Expertise.<br />
