What will I study<br />
This is a practical and theory based course which consists of you working through a number of<br />
work based units such as:<br />
Building methods and construction technology » Form sand and cement screeds » Prepare<br />
backgrounds for tiling » Know how to tile fl oor surfaces » Know how to tile wall surfaces<br />
There are 8 units in total to complete which includes an external test at the end of the course.<br />
At the end of this qualifi cation you will be considered fully qualifi ed and you will have a good<br />
degree of knowledge of Wall and Floor tiling and will be able to work on site. Assessment is<br />
through observation and written tests.<br />
Moving on<br />
Many have chosen to become self employed at this stage due to the knowledge they have<br />
gained form the course.<br />

Guild of BriCklayers annual BriCkwork ComPetition Comes to<br />
Calderdale ColleGe<br />
In May 2011 Calderdale College’s North Halifax Construction Skills Academy hosted the<br />
Yorkshire Section of the prestigious Guild of Bricklayers Annual Brickwork Competition.<br />
Entrants in the competition travelled from colleges and schools around Yorkshire and<br />
spent the day competing before the presentation of awards took place later in the<br />
afternoon.<br />
Various activities ran alongside the competition, including a master bricklaying<br />
demonstration by former Calderdale College learner and Guild contestant Nigel Aldridge,<br />
presentations by representatives from Staybills and No More Props, plaster moulding<br />
tasters and haircuts and pampering by the hair and beauty learners of The Full Works<br />
salon. The Guild of Bricklayers was founded in 1932 with the aims of promoting and<br />
maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship in brickwork.<br />
The Guild is a national organisation divided into geographical regions where local<br />
competitions, visits, lectures and other activities take place. All competitors worked hard<br />
to produce work of a high standard and North Halifax Construction Skills Academy learner<br />
Brett Michael was awarded the New Entrant, Level 1 prize.<br />
