COMPUTING
“An electronic version of the brain”. The
concept of the fi rst machines that we now
know as the computer was developed in
the early 1940's. These machines could do
one thing at a time, known as a Floating
Operating Point per Second (FLOPS). Move
forward to the year 2011, the Playstation 3
(Due to be replaced with a next generation
consol in the next 2 years) handles over 218
gigaFLOPS. Likewise supercomputers utilised
by the military run over 500 trillion fl oating
point operations per second. In seventy
years the standard for PCs has improved over
the original by over 5000 trillion times. At no
point in the history of human technology has
any fi eld evolved as quickly and dramatically
as computing.
The fi eld only continues to grow and becomes
not only a part of our day to day lives, but a
necessity for millions of people every day.
The wonderful science fi ction stories of the
past are becoming the reality today.
In a fi eld that is constantly evolving, people
look to a new generation of students to
learn and develop the skills to continue its
development and integration into the future
and how computing is changing the way we
think, communicate and live our lives every
single day.
If you would like to become a part of the most
exciting, dynamic and evolving fi eld in the
world, then computing is for you.
You will require the confi dence to work
with PCs to your (and their) full potential,
the dedication to continue developing your
skills in lifelong learning, and an inquisitive
mind to the world of computing as it
develops around you and your abilities in the
computing fi eld as well as elsewhere.
