SUCCESS
StudentS Shine at hair and
Beauty awardS
The Hair and Beauty Department of
Calderdale College celebrated the
achievement of its students on Level 1, 2
& 3 Hair & Beauty Courses with an awards
ceremony at the Shay Stadium. It was the
College’s opportunity to recognise those
students who had excelled on their courses.
The event focussed on the theme of ‘Reach
for the Stars’ reflecting the progress of the
students throughout their courses. It was
evident from the hair styles, glamorous
outfits, immaculate make up and elaborate
nail-art that this celebration was all about
style. ‘Student of the Year’ awards were
presented to students for commitment and
determination in completing qualifications
and for displaying particular skills and
enthusiasm during their chosen course.

Calderdale College has become a Habia
Member School, bringing many advantages
to both learners and staff within the Hair
& Beauty department. This prestigious
membership will give the College the tools
to raise standards and performance in a
number of ways, such as through improved
opportunities for high standard training and
continuous professional development for
staff, discounts on a variety of products and
updates on the latest standards, courses
and materials. As part of the network of UK
learning providers linked together by Habia,
the College is able to share best practise with
other colleges and ensure it is at the forefront
of any new industry initiatives.
Habia is the government appointed standards
setting body for hair, beauty, nails, spa
therapy, barbering and African type hair, and
creates the standards that form the basis
of all qualifications including NVQs, SVQs,
Apprenticeships, Diplomas and Foundation
degrees, as well as industry codes of practice
Life SkiLLS LearnerS ceLeBrate
their achievementS
There was a chance to celebrate success
and catch up with old friends for Life Skills
Learners at their certificate presentation
event at Calderdale College. Former
students returned to join those still studying
at the College as they picked up awards
for Life Skills and Employability courses
completed earlier this year. Certificates were
awarded to Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 learners
who had achieved qualifications in Personal
Progress, Personal and Social Development
and Employability.
The learners undertook a variety of activities
to achieve their certificates, from running the
D café, a Book Club and Trolley Shop to taking
part in healthy lifestyle activities and local
environmental projects.
caLderdaLe coLLege haS received
a new accoLade for equaLity and
diverSity.
“Investors in Diversity” is awarded by the
National Centre for Diversity. The College
had to meet 18 sets of criteria which included
staff development, teaching and learning,
commitment to equality and diversity
and relationships with stakeholders. The
assessment took place in November over two
and a half days. Calderdale College
is the only organisation to hold this
prestigious award in the Calderdale
area with the assessor stating:
“Throughout my two and a half
days on site I found that staff and
learners were very welcoming
and when I walked around the
building I observed a very good
atmosphere throughout. There is
a very open and inclusive culture
within the College and staff said
that they were proud to work for
the College.”
