A demonstration of what is required may be beneficial <strong>to</strong> help show the level of<br />

Basic skills – They will need <strong>to</strong> keep their bal<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d steering under control while<br />
riding slowly. The pupil should look up <strong>an</strong>d ahead, not down.<br />
They should try <strong>to</strong> avoid:<br />
• loss of bal<strong>an</strong>ce;<br />
• loss of steering control;<br />
• harsh use of throttle <strong>an</strong>d brakes;<br />
• riding <strong>to</strong>o fast; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• not using the footrests.<br />
The pupils should underst<strong>an</strong>d how <strong>to</strong> take effective observations including knowing<br />
the location of <strong>an</strong>y blind spots, <strong>an</strong>d how <strong>to</strong> check they are clear before moving away.<br />
You should be able <strong>to</strong> keep pace <strong>an</strong>d be close enough <strong>to</strong> give advice.<br />
Carry out controlled braking using both brakes<br />
Your pupils will need <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> operate the brakes in a<br />
controlled m<strong>an</strong>ner so they c<strong>an</strong>:<br />
• control their speed; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• s<strong>to</strong>p accurately.<br />
You should show them how <strong>to</strong> use both brakes <strong>to</strong>gether for maximum control <strong>an</strong>d<br />
s<strong>to</strong>pping ability. The import<strong>an</strong>ce of this skill c<strong>an</strong> be related <strong>to</strong> the need <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p<br />
accurately at junctions.<br />
Explain <strong>to</strong> your pupils that they need <strong>to</strong> use all of their fingers on the front brake lever for<br />
maximum control <strong>an</strong>d s<strong>to</strong>pping power<br />
