The pupils should be instructed <strong>to</strong> look round just before moving off.<br />
You must be close enough <strong>to</strong> observe <strong>an</strong>d give advice.<br />
At the conclusion of this exercise it is import<strong>an</strong>t, that a two-way discussion takes<br />
place with your pupils with a focus on how <strong>to</strong> avoid late reaction <strong>to</strong> foreseeable<br />
hazards (prevention is better th<strong>an</strong> cure). Ask them how they could prevent having<br />
<strong>to</strong> steer <strong>to</strong> avoid a collision, it is always better they come up with the correct <strong>an</strong>swer<br />
as it is more likely <strong>to</strong> remain with them.<br />
Carry out rear observation correctly<br />
To be safe on the road your pupils should know as much about the traffic behind<br />
them as they c<strong>an</strong>. This c<strong>an</strong> be achieved by:<br />
• using the mirrors; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• turning <strong>an</strong>d looking over their shoulder.<br />
You should explain the import<strong>an</strong>ce of effective rear observations including:<br />
• how <strong>an</strong>d when <strong>to</strong> use the mirrors; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• how <strong>to</strong> overcome the blind spots.<br />
You should get your pupils <strong>to</strong> practise looking round before moving off <strong>an</strong>d whilst<br />
on the move.<br />
Basic skills – They will need <strong>to</strong> practise using their mirrors <strong>an</strong>d looking around while<br />
moving so they c<strong>an</strong>:<br />
• see what’s behind;<br />
• check blind spots; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• keep control whilst looking around.<br />
They should try <strong>to</strong> avoid:<br />
• looking round for <strong>an</strong> excessive amount of time;<br />
• veering off course while looking round; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• poorly timed rearward gl<strong>an</strong>ces.<br />
