2. CBT Syllabus<br />

Carry out simulated left <strong>an</strong>d right turns from major <strong>to</strong> minor roads <strong>an</strong>d<br />

when emerging at junctions, correctly using OSM/PSL routine<br />

Your pupils need <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> deal safely with road junctions. You should explain<br />

the OSM (Observation, Signal, M<strong>an</strong>oeuvre) <strong>an</strong>d PSL (Position, Speed, Look) routines<br />

where necessary give a demonstration.<br />

Use of the mirrors <strong>an</strong>d the ‘lifesaver’ look should be explained. An expl<strong>an</strong>ation of<br />

different junction types, road markings <strong>an</strong>d traffic signals <strong>an</strong>d signs will also need <strong>to</strong><br />

be given.<br />

Your pupils need <strong>to</strong> know how <strong>to</strong> deal with left <strong>an</strong>d right turns, major <strong>to</strong> minor <strong>an</strong>d<br />

minor <strong>to</strong> major. A mock junction layout may used.<br />

Basic skills – They will need <strong>to</strong> know that right <strong>an</strong>d left turns require different<br />

procedures. They need <strong>to</strong>:<br />

• recognise the different types of turn;<br />

• demonstrate correct road positioning;<br />

• make effective observation; <strong>an</strong>d<br />

• give correct signals in good time.<br />

They should try <strong>to</strong> avoid:<br />

• making badly timed rearward or sideways gl<strong>an</strong>ces;<br />

• giving badly timed or incorrect signals;<br />

• looking around when the situation calls for concentration ahead; <strong>an</strong>d<br />

• not c<strong>an</strong>celling signals after turning.<br />

Carry out U-turn m<strong>an</strong>oeuvre satisfac<strong>to</strong>rily<br />

Riding a U-turn is a set exercise which also has a practical use when riding on the<br />

road. Your pupils need <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong> ride their mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle around in a U-turn:<br />

• under control;<br />

• with their feet on the footrests; <strong>an</strong>d<br />

• keeping aware of the traffic conditions.<br />

The skills your pupils gain in this exercise will be needed in both Element E <strong>an</strong>d during the<br />

practical mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle test.
