Faults they should avoid:<br />
• failing <strong>to</strong> look far enough ahead;<br />
• reacting <strong>to</strong>o late;<br />
• riding <strong>to</strong>o fast; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• approaching <strong>an</strong> obstruction in the wrong gear.<br />
Dual carriageways, including the use of acceleration <strong>an</strong>d deceleration<br />
l<strong>an</strong>es (where the opportunity arises)<br />
If you have access <strong>to</strong> dual carriageways you must provide practical <strong>training</strong> <strong>to</strong> your<br />
pupils. Where this is not possible you should ensure they have a full underst<strong>an</strong>ding<br />
of the necessary procedures.<br />
You should cover practically as m<strong>an</strong>y of the following situations as the <strong>training</strong><br />
environment allows:<br />
• Turning left from a dual carriageway, when there is no deceleration l<strong>an</strong>e or slip<br />
road <strong>an</strong>d when one is available;<br />
• Turning left on<strong>to</strong> a dual carriageway where there is no acceleration l<strong>an</strong>e or slip<br />
road <strong>an</strong>d also where these are available;<br />
• Turning right on<strong>to</strong> a dual carriageway including correct <strong>an</strong>d safe use of the central<br />
reservation;<br />
• Turning right from a dual carriageway including the safe use of filter l<strong>an</strong>es <strong>an</strong>d<br />
central reservation when turning;<br />
• Correct positioning when travelling along the carriageway <strong>an</strong>d correct use of l<strong>an</strong>e<br />
discipline; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• Overtaking safely when necessary.<br />
Basic skills - To deal safely with dual carriageways your pupils must:<br />
• use the OSM/PSL routine correctly;<br />
• position themselves correctly on the road;<br />
• control their speed <strong>to</strong> suit the road, weather <strong>an</strong>d traffic conditions;<br />
• obey road markings <strong>an</strong>d traffic signs;<br />
• react correctly <strong>to</strong> other road users;<br />
• overtake safely when necessary; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• demonstrate effective observation.<br />
