Roundabouts<br />
There are set procedures for dealing with roundabouts. You need <strong>to</strong> discuss <strong>an</strong>d<br />
demonstrate how <strong>to</strong> go left, ahead <strong>an</strong>d right, including how <strong>to</strong> apply the OSM/PSL<br />
routine for the direction you intend <strong>to</strong> travel. This will include applying the correct:<br />
• signalling procedures;<br />
• l<strong>an</strong>e discipline; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• observation.<br />
You need <strong>to</strong> make sure your pupils adopt correct procedures for each roundabout<br />
they deal with.<br />
Basic skills - Pupils must be able <strong>to</strong>:<br />
• take effective rear observation;<br />
• approach at the correct speed <strong>an</strong>d judge the speed of other traffic;<br />
• give the correct signals at the right time <strong>an</strong>d c<strong>an</strong>cel them when necessary; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• follow the correct road position throughout.<br />
Faults they should avoid:<br />
• giving wrong or misleading signals;<br />
• approaching at the wrong speed;<br />
• s<strong>to</strong>pping when the way is clear;<br />
• riding out in<strong>to</strong> the path of approaching traffic;<br />
• positioning incorrectly; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• failing <strong>to</strong> take effective observation.<br />
Junctions<br />

Your pupils will have practised turning left <strong>an</strong>d right in Element C. They now have <strong>to</strong><br />
combine these riding skills with real traffic situations. You need <strong>to</strong> see how your<br />
pupils deal with a variety of junctions. These include:<br />
• crossroads;<br />
• T-junctions;<br />
• staggered junctions; <strong>an</strong>d<br />
• Y-junctions.
