which the asterisk (*) is prefixed are those which correspond with<br />

names in his hst of languages. This shows that the tribes not so<br />

indicated in his hst of tribes were not considered by him as speaking<br />

distinct idioms.<br />

If his conchision be accepted without reserve, so far as the present<br />

investigation is concerned all the names in his list of tribes having<br />

no corresponding name in his list of languages may as well be ex-<br />

cluded, but this would leave the whole subject to his judgment without<br />

investigation. It is proper first to ascertain how many names<br />

can be eliminated from the list as duplicates, or are otherwise clearly<br />

erroneously given, and also those already considered in the preceding<br />

notes.<br />

Those of this list which have been noticed in the preceding notes,<br />

and a conclusion reached in regard thereto, are as follows (retaining<br />

the names as written therein)<br />

Those names which may be eliminated are as follows:<br />

Alchedomas Same as Jalchedunes; in California-Arizona; Yuman.<br />

Ancavistis A band or subdivision of the Faraon Apache.<br />

Anchanes A division of the Concho, speaking their language and living<br />

on the Rio Concho (Orozco y Berra, 1:325).<br />

Ateacari A division of the Cora; synonym of Ateanaca, which denotes<br />

the language.<br />

Bacabaches Orozco y Berra mentions the name in his list and refers to<br />

Sonora, but it is not found there. A Mayo settlement<br />

near Mayo river (?) using the Mayo language (Hrdlicka,<br />

1: 59). It is distinct from Baca.<br />

Bacapas This name appears to have been given a place in Orozco y<br />

Berra's list without sufficient data in his text to justify its<br />

inclusion. A Papago rancheria.<br />

Bagiopas In California-Arizona.<br />

Baimoas See Vaimoas.<br />

Baquiobas In United States, same as Bagiopas.<br />

Basiroas A Lower Pima band. See Hios below.<br />

Batucos Given by Orozco y Berra (1:344) as a synonym of Eudeve,<br />

though in the Rudo Ensayo (181 et seq.) it is alluded to as<br />

a pueblo.
