PWG–DECC NSW Responsible for the management <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong>s reserved as a<br />

range <strong>of</strong> reserve categories under the NPW Act so as to:<br />

• conserve nature<br />

• conserve objects, places <strong>and</strong> features <strong>of</strong> cultural<br />

value<br />

• foster public appreciation, underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong><br />

enjoyment <strong>of</strong> nature <strong>and</strong> cultural heritage <strong>and</strong> their<br />

conservation.<br />

Each reserve category is managed in accordance with a<br />

range <strong>of</strong> principles specific to the reserve category, <strong>and</strong><br />

these include variously:<br />

• conservation <strong>of</strong> biodiversity <strong>and</strong> the maintenance <strong>of</strong><br />

ecological function<br />

• protection <strong>of</strong> geological <strong>and</strong> geomorphological<br />

features <strong>and</strong> natural phenomena <strong>and</strong> the<br />

maintenance <strong>of</strong> natural l<strong>and</strong>scapes<br />

• protection <strong>of</strong> the ecological integrity <strong>of</strong> ecosystems<br />

for present <strong>and</strong> future generations<br />

• conservation <strong>of</strong> places, objects, features <strong>and</strong><br />

l<strong>and</strong>scapes <strong>of</strong> cultural value<br />

• promotion <strong>of</strong> public appreciation <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

<strong>of</strong> a reserve’s natural <strong>and</strong> cultural heritage values<br />

• provision for sustainable visitor use <strong>and</strong> enjoyment<br />

<strong>of</strong> a reserve <strong>and</strong> its values (including opportunities<br />

for outdoor recreation, <strong>and</strong> including adaptive reuse<br />

<strong>of</strong> buildings or structures) that is compatible with the<br />

reserve’s values<br />

• for l<strong>and</strong>s reserved as Aboriginal areas, provision for<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> the reserve by Aboriginal people for<br />

cultural use<br />

• provision for appropriate research <strong>and</strong> monitoring.<br />
