Ensuring equal treatment in health<br />

17. Member States should encourage competent organisati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> instituti<strong>on</strong>s to<br />

include an LGBT perspective in nati<strong>on</strong>al health surveys.<br />

18. Member States should examine the situati<strong>on</strong> regarding access to health services<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the specific issues facing LGBT pers<strong>on</strong>s, particularly their ability to claim ‘next of kin’<br />

status together with representatives of healthcare professi<strong>on</strong>als <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> LGBT<br />

organisati<strong>on</strong>s. In this respect such multi-agency partnerships would facilitate the<br />

development of targeted policies to provide quality health care corresp<strong>on</strong>ding to the<br />

specific needs of LGBT pers<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

19. Member States should also ensure that health care providers inform <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> train their<br />

medical <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>on</strong>-medical staff <strong>on</strong> ethical <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> diversity issues to raise their awareness of<br />

LGBT issues, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> improve the provisi<strong>on</strong> of services to LGBT pers<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

20. Member States should ensure all rights to informed c<strong>on</strong>sent are respected in regard<br />

to procedures <strong>on</strong> intersex children. Medical associati<strong>on</strong>s should ensure that their<br />

members are fully informed <strong>on</strong> current trends in ethics, therapy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> care for intersexual<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

21. Member States are encouraged to take account of the situati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> specific<br />

problems of LGBT seniors within the framework of activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> policies for the<br />

improvement of the life of senior citizens.<br />

Ensuring equal treatment <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> participati<strong>on</strong> in sports<br />

22. Member States are encouraged to work with sports organisati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fan clubs to<br />

combat homophobic incidents <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> hate speech in sports events, supporting them in<br />

developing awareness raising campaigns <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> applying the rule of ‘zero tolerance for<br />

hate incidents’.<br />

23. Sports organisati<strong>on</strong>s or instituti<strong>on</strong>s should c<strong>on</strong>sider developing awareness raising<br />

programmes <strong>on</strong> LGBT issues for staff, coaches <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> athletes, as well as diversity policies<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, in particular, sexual harassment policies in relati<strong>on</strong> to sexual orientati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gender<br />

identity.<br />

24. Sports organisati<strong>on</strong>s or instituti<strong>on</strong>s should take the necessary measures to ensure<br />

that LGBT athletes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> coaches are be able to feel safe to be open about their sexual<br />

identity, if they choose to do so, without fear of negative c<strong>on</strong>sequences.
