Nati<strong>on</strong>al Equality Bodies<br />
There is a general c<strong>on</strong>vergence towards the model of a single Equality Body competent<br />
to deal with all discriminati<strong>on</strong> grounds. Such model is already in place in 18 Member<br />
States (Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, France, Irel<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Cyprus, Latvia,<br />
Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, The Netherl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, Austria, Romania, Slovenia,<br />
Slovakia <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the United Kingdom). In additi<strong>on</strong>, while nine Member States do not, at the<br />
time of writing, have Equality Bodies competent to address discriminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> grounds of<br />
sexual orientati<strong>on</strong>, four States are moving in this directi<strong>on</strong> (Est<strong>on</strong>ia, Italy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Portugal).<br />
Only Sweden has had a body specifically tasked to deal with discriminati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> grounds<br />
of sexual orientati<strong>on</strong>, namely HomO, <strong>on</strong>e of four Equality Ombudspers<strong>on</strong>s. But since 1<br />
January 2009 the Ombudsman against <str<strong>on</strong>g>Discriminati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> grounds of Sexual Orientati<strong>on</strong><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the other Ombudsmen against discriminati<strong>on</strong> have been merged into the Swedish<br />
Equality Ombudsman. The new Ombudsman will base its activities <strong>on</strong> the new<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Discriminati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> Act that will replace the existing seven pieces of legislati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong><br />
