Methodology<br />
The present analysis relied <strong>on</strong> background material collected through the following desk<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fieldwork research activities, which were followed up by data verificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
analysis:<br />
Literature review<br />
The research started with a detailed review of the relevant literature. This facilitated the<br />
subsequent development of the guidelines for the fieldwork <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the country reports.<br />
Country reports<br />
A sociological report <strong>on</strong> the current situati<strong>on</strong> was commissi<strong>on</strong>ed to independent experts<br />
in each Member State providing rich c<strong>on</strong>textual informati<strong>on</strong>, official data <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>on</strong> academic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other research.<br />
Electr<strong>on</strong>ic stakeholder survey<br />
LGBT NGOs, Nati<strong>on</strong>al Equality Bodies <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> public authorities were surveyed through an<br />
electr<strong>on</strong>ic questi<strong>on</strong>naire with the purpose of collecting a ‘stakeholder assessment’ of the<br />
social situati<strong>on</strong>. 343 questi<strong>on</strong>naires were sent out. Of those 84 were fully answered, 132<br />
partly answered (total of 216) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 127 were not answered. The resp<strong>on</strong>ses provide a<br />
valuable insight into the main areas of c<strong>on</strong>cern of key stakeholders across the EU.<br />
Fieldwork<br />
To supplement the data collected in the country reports <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the e-survey, in depth<br />
interviews were carried out across the EU with representatives of LGBT NGOs, public<br />
authorities <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Equality Bodies.<br />
C<strong>on</strong>sultative roundtables<br />
Good practices <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> recommendati<strong>on</strong>s for improving c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for LGBT pers<strong>on</strong>s<br />
identified during the data collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the fieldwork were further discussed with NGOs<br />
from across the EU at two c<strong>on</strong>sultative roundtable meetings in Copenhagen in June<br />
2008, which facilitated knowledge exchange <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the development of synergies. The<br />
roundtables also served to provide the project team with more informati<strong>on</strong> for analysis.<br />
