Open Up Your Workplace: Challenging <str<strong>on</strong>g>Homophobia</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hetero-normativity is a book<br />
c<strong>on</strong>sisting of experiences <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> practical advice gathered from TRACE, which examines<br />
how norms <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> prejudice operate at the workplace <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> how to change them. 188<br />
The prevalence of discriminati<strong>on</strong><br />
A number of studies have been carried out with the aim of surveying the extent of<br />
discriminati<strong>on</strong> against LGBT pers<strong>on</strong>s in the labour market. In this secti<strong>on</strong> surveys in<br />
France, Sweden, Denmark, Hungary <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the United Kingdom indicating the prevalence<br />
of discriminati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> perceived discriminati<strong>on</strong> are highlighted.<br />
In France, the nati<strong>on</strong>al opini<strong>on</strong> poll c<strong>on</strong>ducted by the observatory of L’Autre Cercle<br />
showed that 42 per cent of homosexuals are not visible within their company, while 16<br />
per cent of the cases of homophobia reported in the annual report of SOS Homophobie<br />
(2007) are related to work. In Sweden, a survey 189 by the Arbetslivsinstitutet [Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Institute for Working Life] showed that 30 per cent of homosexual <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> bisexual women<br />
said that demeaning statements of LGB pers<strong>on</strong>s were comm<strong>on</strong> at work. 190 A survey<br />
c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>on</strong> sexual orientati<strong>on</strong> discriminati<strong>on</strong> of lesbians <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gay men in Denmark<br />
showed that 39 per cent had experienced discriminati<strong>on</strong> at work because of their sexual<br />
orientati<strong>on</strong>. 191 A recent analysis of 150 pers<strong>on</strong>al accounts of discriminati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a survey<br />
c<strong>on</strong>ducted by the Institute of Sociology in Hungary showed that more than <strong>on</strong>e-third of<br />
the LGBT resp<strong>on</strong>dents experienced discriminati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> prejudice at work. 192 In a<br />
survey 193 carried out by the trade uni<strong>on</strong> (UNISON) in the United Kingdom, 52 per cent of<br />
LGBT members said that they have been discriminated against because of their sexual<br />
orientati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
