In Bulgaria, for instance, when the project Deafening Silence: The Case in My School<br />

funded by the MATRA Program of the Dutch embassy attempted to probe awareness of<br />

LGBT issues in Bulgarian high schools of the 144 high schools invited to participate in<br />

an initial meeting for the project in the summer of 2007 just 15 resp<strong>on</strong>ded <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

seven participated.<br />

Good practice: Educati<strong>on</strong>al material for schools: In Belgium, the Educati<strong>on</strong> Minister of<br />

the French Community issued in 2006 an educati<strong>on</strong>al guidebook <strong>on</strong> homophobia at<br />

school that was sent to every primary <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> high school in the French-speaking regi<strong>on</strong>. 231<br />

Also in Belgium, the Flemish government subsidised a pi<strong>on</strong>eering project of the Regi<strong>on</strong><br />

of Flemish-Brabant in 2007 developing an educati<strong>on</strong>al toolkit <strong>on</strong> ‘gender diversity <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

transgender’ for pupils from 14 to 18 years of age. 232<br />

Good practice: Children's books: ILGA Portugal has been involved in producing two<br />

children's books with the objective of reaching parents <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> children, explaining the<br />

subject of sexual diversity <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> dec<strong>on</strong>structing stereotypes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> prejudice against LGBT<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> families. 233<br />

Teaching aid <strong>on</strong> sexual identity: In Slovenia, The Peace Institute issued in 2003 the CD-<br />

ROM 'Diversity Makes Us Richer, Not Poorer: The Everyday Life of Gays <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lesbians'<br />

featuring three short movies <strong>on</strong> experiences of discriminati<strong>on</strong> by gays <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> lesbians in<br />

everyday life <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> six sets of interviews with lesbians <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gays discussing issues of<br />

coming out, family, violence, workplace, friends, etc. It is intended to assist teachers in<br />

classroom discussi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> homosexuality. 234<br />

C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Incidents of bullying <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> harassment of LGBT pers<strong>on</strong>s are reported in educati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

settings across the EU affecting the school performance <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> well-being of LGBT<br />

students <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> leading to marginalisati<strong>on</strong>, poor health or dropping out of school. School<br />

authorities across the EU pay little attenti<strong>on</strong> to these worrying phenomena <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> teachers<br />

often lack the awareness, training <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> tools to recognise <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> tackle such problems<br />

effectively.<br />

LGBT NGOs across the EU raise c<strong>on</strong>cerns regarding the absence of sexual orientati<strong>on</strong><br />

issues as well as positive representati<strong>on</strong> of LGBT people <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> their families in<br />
