Regional Consultation Meeting<br />

A regional consultation meeting was held in Atenas, Costa Rica, <strong>to</strong> plan<br />

future activities of Phase II of the Consortium in Central America and the<br />

Caribbean. The objectives of the regional consultation were <strong>to</strong>: (a) present<br />

the status of Consortium activities and achievements <strong>to</strong> date; (b) present<br />

and discuss opportunities <strong>to</strong> improve the dual-purpose production systems<br />

of each of the six countries that will participate in Phase II of Tropileche; (c)<br />

participate in a field visit <strong>to</strong> observe and discuss the technologies being<br />

promoted among producers; (d) develop profiles of research proposals for<br />

Central America and the Caribbean and for each one of the six participating<br />

countries; and (e) identify potential sources of funding.<br />

A common vision of the future of regional production systems was<br />

developed at the regional consultation meeting, and specific activities <strong>to</strong> be<br />

carried out by each country, according <strong>to</strong> its specific priorities, were defined.<br />

There were 29 participants at the consultation meeting, including<br />

researchers, producers, and milk plant processing representatives from<br />

Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Dominican<br />

Republic.<br />
