TECH 170<br />

Problem-Solving Strategies • 5 CR<br />

Presents a wide variety of strategies to build skill in<br />

problem solving. Students practice creative/lateral<br />

thinking techniques and communication skills to<br />

approach technical and non-technical problems.<br />

Prerequisite: Placement by assessment into ENGL<br />

101; or ENGL 092 or 093 with a C- or better. Recommended<br />

prerequisite: BTS 161.<br />

TECH 215<br />

PC Analysis and Configuration I • 5 CR<br />

Presents the basics of PC hardware and software<br />

installation and configuration. Topics include installation<br />

of operating systems and basic troubleshooting<br />

techniques, BIOS, IDE, system optimization,<br />

motherboards, printers, and CMOS set-up.<br />

Students gain hands-on instruction. Course includes<br />

about 50% of the competencies required for<br />

A+ certification. Prerequisite: Placement by assessment<br />

into ENGL 101; or ENGL 092 or 093 with a Cor<br />

better. Recommended: BTS 161 or equivalent<br />

course work or experience.<br />

TECH 217<br />

PC Analysis and Configuration II • 5 CR<br />

Presents in-depth PC hardware and software installation<br />

and configuration. Topics include DOS and<br />

Windows configuration, memory management,<br />

advanced troubleshooting, communications, introductory<br />

network installation and configuration,<br />

basic electrical concepts and measurement, IRQs,<br />

DMA, and I/O addresses. Includes hands-on instruction.<br />

Course includes about 50% of the competencies<br />

required for A+ certification. Prerequisite:<br />

TECH 215 at BCC with a C- or better; or entry code.<br />

TECH 289<br />

Portfolio Evaluation of<br />

Work Experience • 4 CR<br />

Provides an opportunity to document problem<br />

solving skills in a professional portfolio. Students<br />

work independently to prepare portfolio materials<br />

demonstrating their skills and experience. The student<br />

must have at least six months of full-time job<br />

experience in a position closely related to the anticipated<br />

IT degree and must be on track to graduate<br />

within two academic quarters. Course is graded<br />

“credit/no credit.” Prerequisite: Entry code.<br />

TECH 293<br />

Technical Support Internship I • 4 CR<br />

First in a two-quarter technical support internship<br />

on campus. Students provide technical assistance to<br />

BCC faculty and staff via phone and on-site visits.<br />

For IT degree students only. Provides non-paying,<br />

credit-earning, on-the-job experience. Course is<br />

graded “credit/no credit.” Prerequisite: Entry code.<br />

TECH 294<br />

Technical Support Internship II • 4 CR<br />

Continues IT 293, for additional non-paying,<br />

credit-earning, on-the-job experience in technical<br />

support. For IT degree students only. Prerequisite:<br />

IT 293 at BCC; and an entry code.<br />

Translation<br />

CONTINUING EDUCATION<br />

The Interpretation and Translation programs<br />

are a cooperative effort between <strong>Bellevue</strong> Community<br />

<strong>College</strong> and the Translation and Interpretation<br />

Institute. The T&I program is intended for bilingual<br />

students. Non-credit courses are also available.<br />

Fundamentals of Translation • 3 CR<br />

Learn basic translation techniques and the process of<br />

translation. Includes a practical review of the English<br />

writing, editing, and proofreading skills necessary to<br />

produce clear, and polished translations. Prerequisite:<br />

Acceptance into program; bilingual proficiency.<br />

Advanced Translation<br />

Workshop I • 3 CR<br />

Hands-on experience in the translation, editing,<br />

and finalization of actual commercial texts. Texts<br />

are drawn from a variety of fields including scitech,<br />

legal, commercial, and medical. Emphasis is<br />

on professional presentation. Included is a team<br />

translation project. Prerequisite: Acceptance into<br />

program; bilingual proficiency.<br />

TRANS 112<br />

Translation Practicum • 1 CR<br />

Supervised, 25-hour translator practicum or<br />

mentorship with an agency, experienced freelancer,<br />

corporation, or at the student’s work place. Associated<br />

with a five-hour professional seminar for participating<br />

students. Prerequisite: Acceptance into<br />

program; bilingual proficiency.<br />

Video Production<br />

BUSINESS DIVISION<br />

This program allows students the opportunity to<br />

develop a working skill set in both traditional and<br />

digital video production. Course work includes gaining<br />

competency in the use of non-linear digital editing<br />

software and distributing video over the web.<br />

VIDEO 112<br />

Video Foundations • 5 CR<br />

Introduces the basics of video production utilizing<br />

a personal camcorder and video editing equipment.<br />

Students study video technologies, basic<br />

equipment operation, video composition, basic<br />

lighting and audio, production planning, and visual<br />

storytelling. Students work in groups to create<br />

video projects utilizing post-production editing.<br />

Prerequisite: MEDIA 109 at BCC with a C- or better.<br />

Same as COMM 112. Either VIDEO 112 or COMM<br />

112 may be taken for credit, not both.<br />

VIDEO 122<br />

Audio & Recording I • 5 CR<br />

Introduces basic audio for use in video and computer<br />

media applications. Topics include basic sound characteristics,<br />

microphones, single and multi-track recording<br />

techniques, and sound reinforcement and<br />

enhancement. Students work on a production team<br />

to complete audio productions. Prerequisite: MEDIA<br />

109 at BCC with a C- or better; or entry code.<br />

VIDEO 210<br />

Video Editing & Streaming • 5 CR<br />

Covers computer-based video editing technologies.<br />

Topics include creation of digital video productions for<br />

inclusion in multimedia and web applications such as<br />

QuickTime and creation of video productions using<br />

digital non-linear editing technology. Prerequisite:<br />

VIDEO 112 at BCC with a C- or better; or entry code.<br />
