ALL 122<br />

Listening to Lectures • 5 CR<br />

Introduces students to common rhetorical patterns<br />

of organization used in academic lectures. Students<br />

develop active listening strategies including<br />

recognizing rhetorical cues, analyzing and synthesizing<br />

academic information and demonstrate<br />

these competencies through note taking, short-answer<br />

tests, and the creation of lectures.<br />

ALL 130<br />

Writing From Sources • 5 CR<br />

A lower-division writing course designed to help<br />

students bypass upper-division language prerequisites<br />

upon transferring to 4-year institutions. It follows<br />

the Academic English Program curriculum<br />

(required of non-native speakers of English as a<br />

prerequisite for graduation) that is taught at the<br />

University of Washington. Prerequisite: ENGL 101<br />

with a C- or better or permission of instructor.<br />

ALL 290<br />

Internship Preparation • 5 CR<br />

Course prepares non-native speakers of English<br />

with the skills, strategies, and resources to successfully<br />

pursue internships in their fields of interest.<br />

Students prepare work portfolios, research areas of<br />

interest and practice oral communication techniques<br />

to enhance their career/employment opportunities.<br />

Note: Must be IBP student, international<br />

student eligible for practical training, or other nonnative<br />

speaker of English approved by the program<br />

chair or faculty.<br />

Art<br />

ARTS & HUMANITIES DIVISION<br />

Declared art majors—students whose focus is<br />

the studio arts (painting, photography, etc.) or<br />

commercial art—should take the courses outlined<br />

as follows:<br />

FIRST-YEAR FOUNDATION COURSES:<br />

ART 101, 108, 110, 111, 112, 120<br />

SECOND YEAR:<br />

ART 201, 202, 203, and 10 credits of studio<br />

courses.<br />

Students who plan to transfer to a university or art<br />

school should see an art advisor for detailed schedule<br />

planning as early as possible.<br />

PREREQUISITES:<br />

Students should be aware that many courses<br />

have prerequisites that must be followed in all<br />

cases.<br />

Admission to advanced studio courses is dependent<br />

upon the successful completion of both foundation<br />

and basic studio course work. Check with<br />

your advisor or instructor to make certain you<br />

have met the prerequisites.<br />

TRANSFERABILITY:<br />

Students in doubt about transferability of art<br />

courses from other colleges and art schools to<br />

<strong>Bellevue</strong> Community <strong>College</strong> should check with an<br />

advisor in the Art Department.<br />

RETENTION OF STUDENT WORK:<br />

The college reserves the right to retain, from<br />

each student, as many as three items from each<br />

class each quarter without monetary compensation.<br />

An asterisk (*) indicates a performance class. Use of<br />

performance classes in the distribution area of the<br />

Arts & Science transfer degree is limited to 5 credits.<br />

ART 101<br />

Modern Architecture & Design • 5 CR<br />

Examines the design environment and how its<br />

various components interrelate. Students review<br />

the fields of architecture, planning, landscape, industrial,<br />

and interior design and learn the history<br />

of design movements, styles, and noted designers<br />

since 1850.<br />

ART 103<br />

American Art & Architecture • 5 CR<br />

Compares five regions of the U.S., emphasizing the<br />

cultural diversity that has influenced the art and<br />

architecture of each. Same as AMST 103. Either ART<br />

103 or AMST 103 may be taken for credit, not both.<br />

ART 105<br />

Art Appreciation • V1-5 CR<br />

Illustrates the visual components of art and artistic<br />

techniques and briefly surveys art history. Class<br />

format includes slide lectures and off-campus assignments<br />

at galleries or museums. Suggested for<br />

non-art majors.<br />

ART 108<br />

Introduction to Hand &<br />

Power Tools • 2 CR<br />

Teaches the safe use of hand and power tools in<br />

the wood shop. Class format includes lectures,<br />

demonstrations, practice, and testing.<br />

ART 110*<br />

Two-Dimensional Design • 5 CR<br />

Introduces the elements and principles of two-dimensional<br />

design. Students practice creative problem<br />

solving in original design work. Includes six<br />

hours of laboratory. Requires additional lab time<br />

outside class.<br />

ART 111*<br />

Design: Color • 5 CR<br />

Continues ART 110, with emphasis on color<br />

theory. Students analyze environmental color and<br />

apply color concepts and paint techniques to their<br />

design work. Includes six hours of laboratory. Requires<br />

additional lab time outside class. Prerequisite:<br />

ART 110.<br />

ART 112*<br />

Three-Dimensional Design • 5 CR<br />

Introduces use of the third dimension in design.<br />

Students work with wood, metal, etc., to create objects<br />

using mass, space, time, and light. Requires<br />

lab time outside class. Prerequisite: ART 108. Recommended:<br />

ART 110 and 111.<br />

ART 120*<br />

Drawing I • 5 CR<br />

Teaches basic visual and drawing skills. Students<br />

use charcoal and pencil to draw objects and forms<br />

from direct observation in the studio. Includes six<br />

hours of laboratory. Requires additional lab time<br />

outside class.<br />

ART 121*<br />

Drawing II • 5 CR<br />

Continues ART 120; includes drawing the human<br />

figure from live models. Students gain skill in expressive<br />

drawing using various media. Includes<br />

lecture and lab. Requires additional time outside<br />

class. Prerequisite: ART 120.<br />

ART 150*<br />

Basic Photo I • 5 CR<br />

Introduces basic camera handling, developing,<br />

printing, and composition with black-and-white<br />

film. Students should own a camera with manual<br />

exposure control and must supply their own film<br />

and photographic paper. Requires four hours lecture,<br />

two hours lab per week.<br />
