Diagnostic<br />

Ultrasound Technology<br />

This selective-admissions degree program provides<br />

didactic education and clinical experience as<br />

preparation for employment and national certification<br />

as a diagnostic medical sonographer and is<br />

accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of<br />

Allied Health Education Programs. To be considered<br />

for admission, students must follow the guidelines<br />

published annually for selective admissions.<br />

The diagnostic sonographer or vascular technologist<br />

is a highly skilled individual qualified by<br />

academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic<br />

patient services using ultrasound and related<br />

diagnostic techniques. Graduates are eligible to take<br />

the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical<br />

Sonographers’ National Certification examination.<br />

There are eight consecutive full-time academic<br />

and clinical quarters, including summers. Students<br />

enroll full-time throughout the duration of the program.<br />

Classroom education includes a core curriculum<br />

of study that places emphasis on acoustical principles,<br />

properties, and physics; pathophysiology; abdominal,<br />

obstetrical, and gynecological sonography;<br />

echocardiography; and vascular technology. Other<br />

topics of study include neurosonography, intraoperative<br />

sonography, and patient care techniques.<br />
