Continues MUSIC 130 with more advanced keyboard<br />

and music reading skills. Students learn<br />

more keys, chord combinations, and performance<br />

MUSIC 140*<br />

First-Year Private Instruction I • 1 CR<br />

Provides individual studio instruction on a variety<br />

of approved instruments found in school music<br />

groups. Beginning to advanced levels. Lessons with<br />

college-approved instructors are one half-hour to<br />

45 minutes weekly. Private lesson fee is added to<br />

normal college fees. May be repeated for a maximum<br />

of 3 credits in three quarters. Prerequisite:<br />

permission of program chair.<br />

MUSIC 143*<br />

First-Year Private Instruction II • 2 CR<br />

Provides individual studio instruction for serious<br />

music students at intermediate to advanced levels.<br />

Lessons with college-approved instructors are one<br />

hour weekly, on instruments found in school music<br />

Music Technology • 5 CR<br />

Explores electronic and synthesized music. Students<br />

learn sound theory and become familiar<br />

with historical and current hardware and software<br />

for writing and sequencing music. Lecture/demonstration<br />

MIDI Sequencing I • 3 CR<br />

Gives hands-on opportunities to create music using<br />

the equipment introduced in MUSIC 150. Students<br />

complete at least three sequences. May be<br />

repeated for a maximum of 18 credits. Prerequisite:<br />

Music 150. Highly recommended: Basic piano and<br />

keyboard experience; or permission of instructor.<br />

Advanced MIDI:<br />

Digital Audio Techniques • 3 CR<br />

Students learn sophisticated MIDI sequencing and<br />

Digital Audio techniques, how to combine these<br />

technologies into an effective studio workstation,<br />

and how to synchronize music with other media<br />

technology. Prerequisite: MUSIC 151 or entry code.<br />

MUSIC 153<br />

Digital Recording Production • 5 CR<br />

Covers recording and editing skills in digital media.<br />

Students learn digital recording, computerbased<br />

mix down, digital I/O, utilizing digital effects,<br />

and sampling in a 24-channel ADAT and direct-to-disk<br />

recording studio. Same as MEDIA 153.<br />

Either MUSIC 153 or MEDIA 153 may be taken for<br />

credit, not both. Prerequisite: VIDEO 122.<br />

MUSIC 194/195/196/197<br />

Special Topics in Music • V1-3 CR<br />

Allows specialized or in-depth study of a subject<br />

supplementing the music curriculum. Student interest<br />

and instructor expertise help determine the<br />

topic, to be announced in the class schedule. May<br />

be repeated for a maximum of 10 credits. Prerequisite:<br />

Permission of program chair or instructor.<br />

MUSIC 200*<br />

<strong>College</strong> Choir • 3 CR<br />

Offers performance opportunities for student singers<br />

who have completed three quarters of MUSIC<br />

100. Students gain understanding and skills essential<br />

to group and choral singing. Requires five<br />

hours of rehearsal per week plus scheduled outside<br />

rehearsals and performances. May be repeated for<br />

a maximum of 9 credits.<br />

MUSIC 203*<br />

Chamber Choir • 3 CR<br />

A performance class open to advanced vocalists by<br />

audition. Chamber choir includes five hours of rehearsal<br />

per week plus scheduled outside rehearsals<br />

and performances. Course is designed to expose<br />

students to the most advanced musical idioms on<br />

a regular basis, including madrigals, Baroque,<br />

classical and romantic period literature. Course<br />

may be repeated for a maximum of 9 credits. Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of 9 credits in MUSIC 103<br />

and permission of instructor (audition). Students<br />

must schedule MUSIC 100 for three of their six<br />

quarters in music.<br />

MUSIC 205*<br />

Vocal Jazz Ensemble • 3 CR<br />

Develops the vocal techniques, performance, and recording<br />

skills necessary to the contemporary recording<br />

studio singer. Ensemble members are selected by<br />

audition from college choir members who have completed<br />

three quarters of MUSIC 105. May be repeated<br />

for a maximum of 9 credits. Prerequisite: Completion<br />

of 9 credits in MUSIC 105 and permission of instructor<br />

(audition). Students must schedule MUSIC 100 for<br />

three of their six quarters in music.<br />

MUSIC 206*<br />

BCC Jazz Band • 3 CR<br />

Course Descriptions<br />

Offers performance opportunities for instrumentalists<br />

within the Stage Band instrumentation who<br />

have completed three quarters of MUSIC 106. The<br />

ensemble focuses on jazz improvisation, performance,<br />

and interpretation of Big Band jazz literature.<br />

Students audition for available chairs. May<br />

be repeated for a maximum of 9 credits. Prerequisite:<br />

May enroll in MUSIC 206 after three quarters<br />

(9 credits) of MUSIC 106.<br />

MUSIC 210<br />

Second-Year Theory I • 5 CR<br />

Fourth in a six-quarter sequence in Music Theory. Topics<br />

include diatonic materials, basic chromatic chords,<br />

analysis, composition, sight singing, and ear training.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSIC 112 or permission of instructor.<br />

MUSIC 211<br />

Second-Year Theory II • 5 CR<br />

Fifth in a six-quarter sequence in Music Theory.<br />

Topics include advanced chromatic chords, advanced<br />

modulation, analysis, composition, sight<br />

singing, and ear training. Prerequisite: MUSIC 210<br />

or permission of instructor.<br />

MUSIC 212<br />

Second-Year Theory III • 5 CR<br />

Last in a six-quarter sequence in Music Theory.<br />

Topics include 20th-century techniques, analysis,<br />

composition, sight singing, and ear training. Prerequisite:<br />

MUSIC 211 or permission of instructor.<br />

MUSIC 240*<br />

of instruments. Lessons with college-approved instructors<br />
