Teaches advanced techniques in black-and-white<br />

photography. Students practice creative seeing,<br />

problem solving, and using the zone system. Requires<br />

four hours lecture, two hours lab per week.<br />

ART 153*<br />

Darkroom Laboratory<br />

Techniques • 1 CR<br />

Provides darkroom privileges for students not enrolled<br />

in a photography class. Students with working<br />

knowledge of darkroom processes gain additional<br />

practical experience. May be repeated for a<br />

maximum of 3 credits. Prerequisite: ART 150 or<br />

permission of instructor.<br />

ART 199<br />

Individual Projects in Art • V1-3 CR<br />

Allows an individual student to acquire or practice<br />

skills beyond the regular curriculum. Students<br />

must have appropriate foundation-level skills.<br />

May be repeated for a maximum of 9 credits. Prerequisite:<br />

Permission of instructor.<br />

History of Western Art • 5 CR<br />

Surveys the history of Western art from prehistoric<br />

Europe and the ancient Near East, Greece, Rome,<br />

and early Christian through the Middle Ages. Students<br />

also learn basic art-historical terms and concepts.<br />

Slide lecture format.<br />

History of Western Art • 5 CR<br />

Surveys European art of the Italian and Northern<br />

Renaissance, Baroque period, and early 18th century.<br />

ART 203<br />

History of Western Art • 5 CR<br />

Surveys European and American art from the late<br />

18th through the 21st century.<br />

ART 205<br />

Survey of Non-Western Art • 5 CR<br />

An overview of the visual art of Asia (including<br />

India, China, and Japan), the Native Americas,<br />

Oceania, and Africa. Examines the development of<br />

the visual arts of the non-western world within<br />

unique cultural traditions as well as within certain<br />

cross-cultural contexts. Slide lecture format. Twooff<br />

campus field trips required.<br />

Advanced Studio: Drawing I • 5 CR<br />

Provides studio experience building on objectives<br />

learned in the basic drawing courses. Includes six<br />

hours of lecture and lab, with additional time required<br />

outside class. Prerequisite: ART 111, 121,<br />

and permission of instructor.<br />

Continues ART 221. Includes six hours of lecture<br />

Introduction to Aesthetics • 5 CR<br />

Explores the nature of art and the aesthetic experience.<br />

Students analyze the artistic theories and<br />

aesthetic principles underlying Eastern and Western<br />

art. Format includes several field trips during<br />

class time. Same as PHIL 225. Either ART 225 or<br />

PHIL 225 may be taken for credit, not both.<br />

ART 240*<br />

Oil Painting • 5 CR<br />

Introduces color theory and techniques for working<br />

in oils. Students learn modeling in light and shade<br />

composition. Includes six hours of lecture and lab,<br />

with additional time required outside class.<br />

ART 242*<br />

Advanced Studio: Oil Painting • 5 CR<br />

Continues ART 240. Prerequisite: ART 111, 121,<br />

and 240; or permission of instructor.<br />

ART 252*<br />

Basic Color Photo • 5 CR<br />

Introduces basic theory and techniques of color<br />

photography. Students learn processes for negative<br />

and positive materials and color enlarging as<br />

well as principles of composition and visual communication.<br />

Prerequisite: ART 151 or permission<br />

of instructor.<br />

Photo III • 5 CR<br />

Explores advanced techniques in photography.<br />

Students review the history of photography and<br />

practice creative solutions to visual problems. Prerequisite:<br />

ART 110, 151, or permission of instructor.<br />

Basic Ceramics I • 5 CR<br />

Introduces basic forming techniques of hand building<br />

and surface techniques including under glazes<br />

and glazes for earthenware and high-fire clay bodies.<br />

Students also get limited time on the wheel.<br />

Basic Ceramics II • 5 CR<br />

Continues ART 260 with emphasis on wheel throwing<br />

techniques and more advanced surface techniques.<br />

ASTR 101<br />

Introduction to Astronomy • 5 CR<br />

Offers a general survey of astronomy, including<br />

the moon, planets, solar system, stars, galaxies,<br />

and cosmology. Non-mathematical approach.<br />

Classes meet in the planetarium. Either ASTR 101<br />

or ASTR 105 may be taken for credit, not both.<br />

ASTR 105<br />

Beginning Astronomy • 6 CR<br />

A general, non-math survey of topics in astronomy,<br />

including history, solar system, stars, galaxies and<br />

cosmology. Includes a weekly lab. Either ASTR 101<br />

or ASTR 105 may be taken for credit, not both.<br />

ASTR 201<br />

Observational Astronomy • 6 CR<br />

Emphasizes observation and instrumental techniques.<br />

Students focus on the scientific and experimental<br />

process involved in investigating celestial<br />

objects. Format may include night observation using<br />

the college telescope. Recommended: Good understanding<br />

of basic mathematics. Prerequisite:<br />

ASTR 101 or 105.<br />
